I am upstairs. My wife is downstairs, as it has been for the last six weeks. She thinks I am working. You know otherwise. I have caught up on my backlog of Breaking Bad and am now half-way through Gilmore Girls. My bike trainer, like my office in Springfield, is set up for business but is choked with cobwebs. Nevertheless, I rode Wednesday so this is my Wednesday Night Ride Report.
I started Wednesday's ride in the morning. Both my bike and myself groaned as I mounted. I considered putting my newly gestated Covid-19 pounds on a tag-a-long trailer but attaching one to my bike is beyond by mechanical ability. My spandex NCC kit left nothing to the imagination, thereby assuring me social distancing.
I rode to my Springfield office, about 25 miles. I lost my bike computer a few weeks ago, and for those few weeks, I estimated very high speeds. Now that I replaced it, I am disappointed, again. When I got to my office I watered my plant, took a nap, ate an enormous Italian take-out lunch, took another nap and wrote hilarious emails to my family and friends, okay, friend. Then, at 5:30 p.m., it was time to clip in and ride home.
My downtown office building is across the street from the completely empty MGM Casino. The streets were eerily quiet. It was warm enough, and the wind was at my back. I took a secret bike-path along the river to the North End Bridge that crosses into West Springfield. Its highly irregular surface was littered with winter’s detritus. Even though it was still rush hour, I nearly had the bridge to myself, so I took a lane. So far so good. The rest of my route was parallel to Route 5, until I dropped onto Northampton Street via Route 141. As I passed the Holyoke Soldiers’ Home, I held my breath. The wind pushed me home just before sunset, just in time for my fifth meal of the day and a drink, or two.
I will use whatever good will I have generated from my past Ride Reports, to stop here to say during these challenging times that we, who have a passion for cycling, are blessed. The streets are ours. I for one would love to hear from all the other riders on this list serve about their rides, whether they be solo or in small groups, as we literally muscle our way through this pandemic.
