Hello everybody,

I joined the club recently and haven't meet many of you yet...
The triathlon season is starting soon and I'm planning a few triathlons. I'm wondering which triathlons you are planning to do.

I registered to the Westfield Wave triathlon (sprint), Bare Hill triathlon (sprint), Greenfield (Olympic distance) and Dover-sherborn triathlon (sprint).

I also registered to a half-iron man (Syracuse NY)...but it is the first time for me to do such a long race... If anyone in the club has done and can share with me the experience and give me some tips I would really appreciate! I'm a bit concerned for that one.. ;) I need to train more! :-)

Thanks!
All the best and see you in the next bike ride!

Hi Luiz,
I'm planning on The OH MY GODDARD! olympic distance in Warwick RI in June, the Greenfield olympic distance, and a half iron man in Old Orchard Bay Maine at the end of August.  There is a group of us that get together on Wednesday mornings 6am ish at the Smith track.  It should be starting up soon.
Looking forward to meeting you.

Welcome, Luiz. I second Yosh's recommendation of Wednesday track workouts, they're great fun, usually start up mid-May.

I'm just doing sprints this year, registered for:

May 19 - NE Season Opener
June 10 - Westfield Wave
July 14 - Give Peace a Tri
August 5 - Greenfield Tri
September 8 - HMF Women's Tri

Welcome, Luiz! I am coming out of hibernation and ready to start up Wednesday track workouts. I am tentatively planning to be there TOMORROW, May 9--Smith College track, 6:15 am, meet by the flagpole to warm up.

I have some timed pickups that I will do on the cinder track. These workouts are for anyone and everyone--I'll help you adapt the workout to your needs. Bring a water bottle, come ready to warmup. Hope to see some of you there!

Hi Kate!
Awesome! Tomorrow I can’t because I’m not in the area but I’ll be there next Wednesday!

Enjoy the workout!
Luiz

OK, Folks, this is the REAL start of track workouts! Tomorrow, wednesday May 23, meet at the Smith College track at 6:15 am for warmup. I will be there, and I will have a workout--we will warm up together first. All levels and stages of training welcome. Bring a water bottle. You can park anywhere at Smith this early--good spots are by the gym (cross the red footbridge to get to the track) or by the tennis courts.

We do not cancel for rain--only for active lightning/thunder. See you there! Email to come momentarily if you're on the tri mailing list.

Since it's July already, maybe I should post about my race plans, to see if anyone is joining me!

I did the Westfield Wave for the first time ever-usually this conflicts with a week I have to be out of town, but it didn't this year, and I'm so glad! What a great race. I was sick for over a week before, so didn't feel tiptop, but I didn't feel awful either, and it is always so fun to get out there and race and to see so many friends. Special thanks to Peter, who caught me at the halfway point on the run and motivated me to pick it up. And to Joellen, who passed me on the bike while delivering a heartfelt, complimentary speech about my swim leg while I was just trying not to barf going half her speed.

Next up: Litchfield Hills Olympic Tri on July 15th. I've never done this, but I heard it's both beautiful and hilly. I basically chose my races this year based on data and family stuff, and this was what July 15 had to offer! But I'm psyched to have an excuse to try this one. If anyone would like to join me, I'd love company!

My final race is Nationals in Cleveland on August 11. I suspect I'll try to use that end of season fitness to do 1 or 2 more races in the late summer/early fall, bu that kinda depends on family schedules. I am intrigued by the October "gut check" sprint in Nickerson State Park on the Cape, so let me know if you're interested in that as well. It just sounds fun, and I think not as hard core as they make it out to be. But I figure by then it can't be 98 degrees, right?

Looks like a good schedule!

Luiz and/or I are finishing up the season with:

Greenfield international distance on August 5th
Half-steelman (relay) in Pen Yan NY on August 19th
Luiz is doing the Lake Placid Half Ironman on September 9th
Dover-Sherborn sprint on September 16th; this one has a lower swim:bike ratio than some other sprints, so if you (like me) aren't particularly buoyant it is a good course.

Hi Kate,

It was really nice to see you at Westfield.

I did Litchfield a few years ago, in the pouring rain. From what I could tell, it would be a fun course to do in fair weather. The bike course was hilly and the run was shaded.

John has been curious about Gut Check for years. He's doing a half iron in September and so he'll decide after that. It would be fun to go as a group.

Awesome that you're going to Nationals!

Wow, everyone's off to a great start!

Here are my tri's for the year:

done:

May 19 MA NE Season Opener (the water was 62 degrees, crazypants!)
June 10 MA Westfield Wave (sprint) (with an actual swim and everything)

upcoming:

July 14 NH Give Peace a Tri
July 29 RI Whaling City
Aug 5 MA Greenfield (sprint)
Sept 8 CT Wearsafe/HMF Women's

And I'm kinda considering the Quaboag sprint tri this weekend, tempting that it's just an hour away, but I already have 2 other potential training/group things that morning. Anyone done this one?

Hi Kate,

I was just considering doing the Litchfield Hills tri.  I haven't been swimming but I know I can swim the course very slowly and then try to make up my time on the bike.

Who else was interested in Litchfield Hills?

Way to go everyone who made it to Litchfield Hills Triathlon!  I caught a ride with Kate and we saw Beth and Patty there as well. Nice job Kate on placing in your division.  I'm not sure if Beth placed but when I saw her passing me on the run she looked in great form and spirit.  Thank you Patty for the offer of some performance enhancing sport magic...must of helped a little because after I got passed by you on the run I was able to pull together a strong finish and not come in last in my division.

If you've never done Litchfield Hills before it has it's ups and downs. Mostly very steep ups. The lake is as clean as it's ever going to be at a race and really nice to swim in. The bike had some nice fast spots but some challenging road conditions and a monster of an uphill finish. This year the run got pretty humid and hot and I believe that was the reason for trimming it a bit.

I was personally happy to have made it into transition from my bike before someone had won the race....next goal is get out of transition before someone wins the race.

I had fun and road tripping with Kate and her bike Moo was a highlight.

See you on the track.

Yosh,

It was great to meet you on the run!!  When I saw the NCC jersey ahead of me I thought it could be you.  This was one of the most difficult bike and run courses I have done in many years of racing.  I regularly do my long runs in the hilltowns and this course was definitely a typical Sunday run for me but not after a swim and bike!!!  The bike course was interesting because it is a toss up as to which bike to ride:  tri or road.  I am interested in what others thought.

Yosh, glad to share my Tailwind.  I believe in the stuff especially in the heat, and you were able to stay ahead of me for the remainder of the run.  I haven't been training for tri's and it showed on Sunday.

Yes, Jay Gump from Conway won the race.  He turned 50 this year and has been smashing local KOM's on Strava and Sunday he showed that the older age groups still have it.  I also heard that the race had been won as I headed out for my run.

If someone wants a very challenging Oly distance course, do this race.

Also, we are still in need of road marshals for the Tour of the Hilltowns on Saturday.  Signup is here:  https://www.volunteersignup.org/KMY9D

I'm a little late to the discussion, but I'm finally making decisions on my race plans. I did the Quaboag tri on July 8 -- and it was great to see NCCers Pat, Melissa, and Sarah on the course. Next up is the international distance at the Greenfield tri on Aug 5. The big finale is (gulp) a half iron distance in September. I turned 50 last month, and I'm copying JoEllen's half iron for a half century bday celebration. This will be my first half iron, and I'm looking at the Big George Half at Lake George on Sept 2 or the Lake Placid Half on Sept 9. Any recommendations? I'm open to other suggestions for half iron races in September. I know I'm going to need lots of cheering to get me through so it would be fun to do a race with other NCCers.
Thanks,
Lisa

Hi Lisa,

I'm also new to half ironman's. I did my first in Syracuse in the beginning of this season and enjoyed a lot. I'm registered for Lake Placid in September. I've read good things about it. I'm also doing the steelman in relay (http://www.peasantman.com/).

See you,
Luiz

Luiz, Casey and I are contemplating doing the 70.free in Hubbardston next weekend. Has anyone done this before or planning to do it this year?

Thanks!
