Hi everyone,

A unique cycling opportunity is on offer in Hartford this October.  As part of the annual Hartford Marathon weekend, the Hartford Marathon Foundation is offering a Pedal To The Medal - a chance to ride the marathon course with police escort on the morning of the marathon itself.  And when I say 'morning" I mean oh-dark-30.  The PTTM goes at 3:30am (that's correct) and goes for 3 hours.  The course will be closed to traffic and have a rolling enclosure.  All riders must be off the course at 6:30am.  I traded messages with the RD and she told me that if any cyclists want to try for 2 full laps in the 3 hours, they are welcome to do so.  From what I gather, those who want to crank the cranks to try and get 52.4 miles in 3 hours (and the course profile looks pretty conducive to that) they need to make sure they know the course since it seems those faster riders will get ahead of the lead PD car.  (The whole focus on the PTTM is to get people out and riding and motivated.)  The field is limited and has sold 50% of the slots as of last Friday, so if you want to do this, I recommend registering straight away.  Here is the FB link: https://www.facebook.com/pg/pedaltothemedalhartford/photos/?ref=page_internal

Hope to see you there!

Thanks for posting this, Rodney, this looks very cool.  Anyone else interested in giving this a shot?  Two laps in three hours on closed roads seems very achievable.  The date is Sat Oct 12.

- Jonathan

Sorry, the date is Sat Oct 13, not the 12th.

Jonathan/Charlie/Anyone Else interested in this: I just received updated info from the RD.  Bottom line: this event is not what I was led it to believe.  Contrary to the information I was given by the RD in July...the roads will be open; traffic rules have to be followed; it will be a group ride with a rolling enclosure; lead riders will be limited to 10mph; going ahead of the lead vehicle is not allowed.

I decided that my entry fee will be a donation to the charity cause, as I am not going to get up at oh-dark-30 to drive to Hartford to pedal slowly through 26.2 miles at someone else's pace then drive back home.

For anyone who is registered and is going to go - be advised that event day packet pick up is not available, so you must go to the XL Center on Wed, Thur, or Fri of Hartford Marathon week.
