This Saturday, the B ride will be a remote start from the center of Goshen to ride the Tour of the Hilltowns race course.  There will be no B ride starting from our normal location at Pulaski Park.

TIME: 9 AM
LOCATION: Center of Goshen, the town parking lot at the tennis courts, just past the Goshen general store and post office (33 Main St).  Plenty of free parking.
ROUTE: We will ride up Route 9 to the start at Notchview and do the entire course, except for the return climb to the finish on 8a. Instead of retracing our ascent to Windsor on Rte 9, we will take the beautiful River Rd from Savoy to Cummington, which takes us past the Windsor Jambs.  82 Miles/ 5800'. https://ridewithgps.com/routes/39528056

The weather looks like it will be April temperatures (!!!), so layer accordingly.  Hydration and snacks are a challenge on this course. Please come prepared.  Our best option is probably to go into Charlemont at mile 36, before the big climb.

Non-NCC members are welcome on this ride, but please sign the waiver.

Oh, and if you are going to be a real bad *** and ride your bike from Northampton to Goshen - give me a heads up, I will hold the start briefly if we are expecting you.  I wish I had the fitness this year to do that!

Tim,
Thanks so much for posting this ride.  I am hoping to participate, and may bring a couple of knuckleheads (like Mike Y, and maybe Mike H.) I am planning to ride from Florence to turn it into a century, but I’ll be at a wedding the night before, so we’ll see.  My daughter, Charlotte, may drive out after the wedding in Spencer to attend, but she would probably drive up to Goshen.  Best, Joe. Hi, thanks for sharing.
Never done a group ride before

What would the expected average speed be for this?

George,

The B's are a casual but strong group, flexible and everyone does their own thing on the climbs.  Some hammer it, some take it easy.  We aim to stay together on the flats, but fair game for a leader in the group to work us hard.  We don't drop riders unless there is a large gap that will continue throughout.

That said, we "advertise" on our website the B's are 17-20 MPH.  For this route, with the steep climbs, we should average on the low end of that- so I'd estimate 17. Obviously, it all depends on how many riders we have, the wind, and how strong the group is together.  East Hawley Road is a major challenge.

If you have never done a group ride, and you are going to ride with us, please make sure to introduce yourself to me.  I will want to give you some tips on how we rotate in the paceline safley.
