I'm putting together an informal relaxed-C "last ride of 2022" on
Friday from North Amherst through Turner's Falls and back on the
Deerfield side for a total of 38 miles and 1300 feet. Weather should
be in the mid-upper 40's maybe even touching 50, and very little wind
is predicted!

Primary meeting is 12:00 pm at the "Mill River Recreation Area"
parking (95 Montague Road) in Amherst, leading to the total of 37 /
1300
Optional longer version departs at 11:10 am from the Damon Road
parting at the trail bridge from Northampton to Hadley and adds 10
fairly flat miles on each end, for a total of 56 or so miles.
From the Mill River rec area starting point, the route passes by
Puffer's Pond then turns north on fresh new pavement through Leverett.
After passing the beaver pond and rounding the hill, we go through
Montague Center and past the Bookmill. As drawn there's a mile of
well-packed road-bike friendly gravel on Old Northfield Road, though
if needed we can bypass that on pavement. Either brings us to the
Bridge of Names and then a long gradual descent to Unity Park in
Turner's Falls. Refill is unlikely to be needed in this season, but
there are options there in the village. Otherwise we'll follow the
rail trail west along the power canal. I have us crossing the CT
river on the trail bridge and returning on the Deerfield Side, but if
needed we can take the slightly flatter Montague side south towards
Falls Road instead.
Although Saturday's weather is looking increasingly possible, I'm
planning this ride for Friday when I'm confident things will be nice -
additionally I'd like to have a rest day before Sunday New Years day
where the traditional "temperature ride" is looking increasingly
possible, and likely to end up somewhere close to 50 miles. Had fun
zwifting last night, but I'll still take an outdoor adventure any day
that doesn't mean frostbitten toes!
Given the two starting points and the way winter makes standing around
waiting uncomfortable, RSVP's are mandatory for this ride - please
send me a note off list specifying your starting point.
This is not an official club ride.
Thanks,
Chris
