Hello everybody!

I wanted to send this email a long time ago! Sorry!

The Greenfield triathlon was a grate race! If I could wish something it would have been a bit less hot and humid...but we can't chose everything right? ;)

I think that NCC racers did very well. A big congratulations to Madeline! Madeline, your swimming time is amazing! Congratulations! The biking and running time are also really nice of course!

I saw many of us there: Aleks, Grace, Madeline and Yosh. Did I miss anyone? I don't know about you guys but I suffered for the run...a lot of cramps, but finished. As they said there: to finish is to win, so congrats to everybody who did it! :-) We should also thanks Kate for beeing a volunteer and encourage us before that hill! Thanks Kate!

Lisa, have you decided which half ironman you would like to do? I'm doing Lake Placid and I reserved a house on Airbnb 20min from the race. There are free beds if you or anyone else needs a place to stay! Just let me know!

I hope to see you soon Wednesday morning!
Good week to everybody!
Luiz

Hi Lisa,

I'm also new to half ironman's. I did my first in Syracuse in the beginning of this season and enjoyed a lot. I'm registered for Lake Placid in September. I've read good things about it. I'm also doing the steelman in relay (http://www.peasantman.com/).

See you,
Luiz

I'm a little late to the discussion, but I'm finally making decisions on my race plans. I did the Quaboag tri on July 8 -- and it was great to see NCCers Pat, Melissa, and Sarah on the course. Next up is the international distance at the Greenfield tri on Aug 5. The big finale is (gulp) a half iron distance in September. I turned 50 last month, and I'm copying JoEllen's half iron for a half century bday celebration. This will be my first half iron, and I'm looking at the Big George Half at Lake George on Sept 2 or the Lake Placid Half on Sept 9. Any recommendations? I'm open to other suggestions for half iron races in September. I know I'm going to need lots of cheering to get me through so it would be fun to do a race with other NCCers.
Thanks,
Lisa

Yosh,

It was great to meet you on the run!!  When I saw the NCC jersey ahead of me I thought it could be you.  This was one of the most difficult bike and run courses I have done in many years of racing.  I regularly do my long runs in the hilltowns and this course was definitely a typical Sunday run for me but not after a swim and bike!!!  The bike course was interesting because it is a toss up as to which bike to ride:  tri or road.  I am interested in what others thought.

Yosh, glad to share my Tailwind.  I believe in the stuff especially in the heat, and you were able to stay ahead of me for the remainder of the run.  I haven't been training for tri's and it showed on Sunday.

Yes, Jay Gump from Conway won the race.  He turned 50 this year and has been smashing local KOM's on Strava and Sunday he showed that the older age groups still have it.  I also heard that the race had been won as I headed out for my run.

If someone wants a very challenging Oly distance course, do this race.

Also, we are still in need of road marshals for the Tour of the Hilltowns on Saturday.  Signup is here:  https://www.volunteersignup.org/KMY9D

Way to go everyone who made it to Litchfield Hills Triathlon!  I caught a ride with Kate and we saw Beth and Patty there as well. Nice job Kate on placing in your division.  I'm not sure if Beth placed but when I saw her passing me on the run she looked in great form and spirit.  Thank you Patty for the offer of some performance enhancing sport magic...must of helped a little because after I got passed by you on the run I was able to pull together a strong finish and not come in last in my division.

If you've never done Litchfield Hills before it has it's ups and downs. Mostly very steep ups. The lake is as clean as it's ever going to be at a race and really nice to swim in. The bike had some nice fast spots but some challenging road conditions and a monster of an uphill finish. This year the run got pretty humid and hot and I believe that was the reason for trimming it a bit.

I was personally happy to have made it into transition from my bike before someone had won the race....next goal is get out of transition before someone wins the race.

I had fun and road tripping with Kate and her bike Moo was a highlight.

See you on the track.

Hi Kate,

I was just considering doing the Litchfield Hills tri.  I haven't been swimming but I know I can swim the course very slowly and then try to make up my time on the bike.

Who else was interested in Litchfield Hills?

Since it's July already, maybe I should post about my race plans, to see if anyone is joining me!

I did the Westfield Wave for the first time ever-usually this conflicts with a week I have to be out of town, but it didn't this year, and I'm so glad! What a great race. I was sick for over a week before, so didn't feel tiptop, but I didn't feel awful either, and it is always so fun to get out there and race and to see so many friends. Special thanks to Peter, who caught me at the halfway point on the run and motivated me to pick it up. And to Joellen, who passed me on the bike while delivering a heartfelt, complimentary speech about my swim leg while I was just trying not to barf going half her speed.

Next up: Litchfield Hills Olympic Tri on July 15th. I've never done this, but I heard it's both beautiful and hilly. I basically chose my races this year based on data and family stuff, and this was what July 15 had to offer! But I'm psyched to have an excuse to try this one. If anyone would like to join me, I'd love company!

My final race is Nationals in Cleveland on August 11. I suspect I'll try to use that end of season fitness to do 1 or 2 more races in the late summer/early fall, bu that kinda depends on family schedules. I am intrigued by the October "gut check" sprint in Nickerson State Park on the Cape, so let me know if you're interested in that as well. It just sounds fun, and I think not as hard core as they make it out to be. But I figure by then it can't be 98 degrees, right?

Hey Luiz,

Congrats on a great race in Greenfield.  I just wanted to clear any confusion Kate may have about where she was during the tri.  I was at the bridge encouraging everyone on.  It was great to see and recognize everyone too.  So Aleks in case you were confused who that was calling your name before the bridge, it was me.  I do not know Grace and so sorry that I missed you.  Yosh - I think I got you too!!

It was fun seeing Madeline looking so strong.  And Luis - you were strong every single lap as well.

It was fun volunteering for the race and to have picked that particular spot.

Hi Luiz,

I'd say the swim was by far the best part of the Greenfield Tri or at least the coolest.  I had trouble at the end of the run too--started to feel a little dizzy and wobbly in the heat during the last few miles.  Congrats to all on a great day of racing and strong showing for NCC!

Last weekend I did the Old Orchard Beach half Ironman in Maine and it was spectacular. I would definitely recommend it.
The ocean swim was the most nerve wracking part because I am a very nervous swimmer to begin with but it was very well supported and perfect swimming temps.
The bike course was excellent conditions and felt fairly fast.  The run was a two loop course mostly shaded.  I was anticipating anything around 8 hours and finished 6:18 to my own shock!  I think the bike and swim went remarkably better than I was expecting and the run was hard but was as expected. Very fun atmosphere there too!

Hello all,

Grace sent already an e-mail a few days ago about the 70.free (https://www.trifind.com/re_482481/70free.html)

We are planning on doing it (Grace, Casey and me). Anyone wants to join us?! It is very last minute, but it is only ~40min-1hr from here (it starts at 9am so we have plenty of time to drive there Saturday morning). It is certainly the last opportunity before winter stop us (at least from swimming  ;).  We are in contact with the organizer and I'm copying his e-mail below with some updates regarding the race. A question: would anyone have a wetsuit to lend to Casey (size L or XL)?

All the best!
I hope to see you soon,
Luiz

Subject: 70.free final details
Date: September 26, 2018 at 4:30:51 PM EDT

Here is the bike and run course map, the first 13 of the bike course is the same as the run course.

Please read carefully, here are the final details before the 70.free this Saturday...

First, my apologies to the several of you on this list who told me you can't make it - I included you all only to have a group email list ready to plan for the 2019 70.free in May or June - hope you can make it then!

Please reply all asap to let me know if you can participate - the main reason is my wife is crafting finisher medals for everyone and we need to know how many she should make, thanks!

I would like to move the start time up to 9am for two reasons. First is that the 70.free AccuWeather forecast for Saturday has 7am at 52 degrees and 9am at 56 degrees. The remainder of the day should be ideal w temps in mid 60s. I swam in Comet Pond this past Saturday and water temp was fine for me, w no wetsuit, but was windy and chilly exiting water and air temp was low 60s. Second is 9am would allow time for me to drive folks on first 13 of bike course (same as run course) to familiarize before race as well as stash any food and water you will need on the run. Also, we can sleep in a little later, especially those of you who are traveling farther. I will probably arrive about 6:00 am to help folks w course, etc. Please, if you can attend, reply all and also note if 9am is okay for you or not. If you need to start earlier than 9am, that is ok, folks can start at different times if needed, just lmk so i can plan to arrive earlier to help you out.

If any of your friends or family want to spend the day with us and volunteer, please let us know. We could use someone w a car to set up aid station at mile 35-36 on bike course (at turn around where 122 ends at route 202) as well as on run course. Folks could leave their food/fluids w this person. Volunteers will receive special 70.free gratitude and a homemade medal and bumper sticker as well!

Charlie - are you still able to bring your kayak? My wife is able to use your kayak to mark off the turn around point on the swim course.

Last thing, please feel free to bring food and beverages to share for a 70.free after party, it would be great to have time to add an after party to this emerging 70.free tradition and culture.

Thanks and see you soon!
Dave
