Hello,

NCC is a resource for knowledge and equipment. My knowledge of current biking equipment is nearly non-existent. I have not done anything or kept up to date with cycling information for a couple of years because of personal reasons. I am slowly riding again while trying to get up-to-date with cycling knowledge. Anyhow, I need a “new” groupset for my bike. Does anyone have a groupset that they are willing to sell? My price point is limited. What groupset is a good starting point that one could use for a few years before needing to buy a new groupset or bike? What are people’s experiences, knowledge, and what is comparable if at all to one another to the following groupsets? First, is Shimano Ultrega 6800 “equivalent” to a Shimano 105 groupset? Are there multiple Shimano 105 groupsets? What is the difference between a groupset of different years, for example, a Shimano 205 or Dura-Ace R9100 2018, 2019 or 2020? Should I be more focused on purchasing Shimano Dura-Ace 8000? What is the “average” price point for each groupset without overpaying? I have heard rumors that some professional riders are using Tiagra groupsets for “training.” If it is true, why?

Dear Christopher,

I am happy with 10 year old Dura Ace on one bike, and Ultegra on another.. Less than 1# difference and equal function.  I also have 10 year old SRAM red on a Specialized SL3 Ltd that weighs 13# even, with pedals and  cages.

In general, training matters more than equipment.  I also ride a cheap track bike and a 1970 Mondia.  Either, at 22 and 24 #, will allow me to ride within 1 mph of my average, riding  15# Specialized carbon fiber/ Dura Ace on hilly rides around Shutesbury.  Yesterday, 36 miles and 2000ft of climbing at 17.7mph on a fixed gear 48x16 I bought on Ebay used for $135.  I'm 69 years old.  I've kept up with fast guys while riding a 1950 Rudge Pathfinder Clubman 3 speed.

Others will explain the details you ask about, but dont worry about equipment too much.  Just enjoy a lot of training and the thrill of becoming stronger!

Hope to ride with you before long!

Sincerely,
Brad
