The NCC is starting a new Monday night Zwift race series on November 2.  For this series, we will be joining organized Zwift races, racing against each other as well as other riders.  Scoring will be based on how you finish relative to other riders in your category.

The first race will be on Monday November 2, 5:30 PM EST.  We will be racing the "3R LaGuardia Loop Reverse Flat Race" (http://zwift.com/events/view/1169089), which is six laps of the flat LaGuardia Loop Reverse course in New York, for about 12 miles total.  You can register for the race ahead of time in your browser at the link above, or you can join the race on the spot when you start Zwift by finding it in the event list in the upper right corner of the startup screen.  Note that start times for these races will vary, depending on the Zwift event schedule, but will generally start between 5:00 PM and 7:00 PM.  There is no late join option for organized races on Zwift, so make sure you're ready to go ahead of the scheduled start time.

Scoring will be based on the results published by ZwiftPower (https://zwiftpower.com/).  You must be registered for a free account on ZwiftPower in order for your results to be counted.  If you're not already registered on ZwiftPower, be sure to sign up in advance of the race, as it takes a little while to get your Zwift account linked to your ZwiftPower account.  You should also join the NCC team on ZwiftPower (https://zwiftpower.com/team.php?id=227) so that I can pick you out in the results.

Zwift races have four categories - A, B, C, and D.  You must enter at least the category specified by the "Minimum Category" setting on your ZwiftPower account.  You can race up a category if you'd like, but you cannot race down (a Category B rider can enter the B race or the A race, but cannot race with the C race).  Riders racing up a category will receive a 10% point bonus.  Women racing in any open (mixed-gender) category will also receive a 10% point bonus.

Scoring is based on how well you place relative to the other riders in the race.  The maximum possible points for a race is 100 points.  If there are 100 people in your race, and you finish 1st, you will receive 100 points.  If you finish 2nd, you will receive 99 points.  If you finish last, you will receive 1 point.  If there are 10 people in your race, 1st place is worth 100 points, 2nd place is worth 10 points, etc.  In general, Points = (100 * (B + 1)) / N, where B is the number of riders you beat, and N is the total number of riders in the race.

Optional audio/video chat will be  available on NCC's Discord channel at https://is.gd/nccdiscord.

This race is part of our weekly lineup of  Zwift rides, as follows:
  -  Mon afternoon - Road Race (times will vary between 5 PM and 7 PM EST)
  -  Tue 8:00 PM - Social Ride (invite required)
  -  Thu 5:30 PM - Time Trial / Hill Climb (solo effort, TT bike required) (invite required)
  -  Sat 9:00 AM - Social Ride (weather dependent) (invite required)
Follow Michael Bello on Zwift for invites to the invite-only rides.

The kickoff of the fall Monday Night Zwift Race Series was a lot of fun. We had six racers total across three categories -- Jonathan, Kevin, Zinj, and Melissa racing in the B race, Michael in the Cs, and Jeremy in the Ds. Most of us were on Discord, turning the channel into a tumult of heavy breathing and screaming trainers. Zwift's on-screen leaderboard was not working, making it difficult to see what was going on, but my B race established a front group of about 20 that stayed together for most of the race. Kevin and Zinj were there throughout, while Melissa fell off after a couple of laps and joined a chase group of a few riders. I was near the front approaching the finish and unleashed a decent sprint, finishing behind a handful of riders, but it turned out that we had a bunch of A riders in our pack, and I ended up first in the B group. Kevin was right behind me, followed closely by Zinj, and Melissa outsprinted all but one of the riders in her chase group.

I'm not sure how the other races played out, but Jeremy ended up winning his three-person D group, and Michael grabbed sixth in the Cs. Perhaps they might be able to provide additional details about how their races went.

Results:

B Race
Jonathan O'Keeffe - 1 of 13 - 100.0 points
Kevin Weinman - 2 of 13 - 92.3 points
Zinj Guo - 7 of 13 - 53.8 points
Melissa Warwick - 10 of 13 - 33.8 points

C Race
Michael Bello - 5 of 12 - 66.7 points

D Race
Jeremy Coleman - 1 of 3 - 100.0 points

Standings after Week 1

1. Jeremy Coleman (1 race) - 100.0 points
1. Jonathan O'Keeffe (1 race) - 100.0 points
3. Kevin Weinman (1 race) - 92.3 points
4. Michael Bello (1 race) - 66.7 points
5. Zinj Guo (1 race) - 53.8 points
6. Melissa Warwick (1 race) - 33.8 points

Ok then Jonathan, here's the race report from the D's. One way to look at it is that I was 1st of 3. A more realistic way to look at it is I was 61st out of 63! lol for all the groups. And the only way I qualified for D's instead of C's is  that after 8 months of minimal riding I gained 10 lb so my W/Kg are right on the upper cusp of that category. Anyway, I knew that Zwift races start off super hard so I cranked it up to start and was way in the red for the first 5 minutes. I didn't realize I was seeing everyone in the race, not just my group, so I was wondering just what was going on! I rode tempo most of the time after, with periodic max efforts. I formed a group of 3 with, I guess the other D riders, and then went hard from a couple of miles out and lost them. I was very relieved to realize that all 63 riders were not in my category! It was a blast.
