I think it is important to bring up a discussion of riding with others during this time. Among my friends I see some pretty divergent opinions about this. Cycling News strongly recommends against it - https://www.cyclingnews.com/features/commentary-why-its-better-not-to-ride-together-in-the-time-of-coronavirus/ I also saw a thoughtful letter by Hank Lange, a Brattleboro based athletic coach, which I think is well worth reading. A condensed version (apologies to the author!) below:

Dear Friends & Outdoor Enthusiasts:

Excuse me if this comes across as presumptuous…

There is much concern and controversy over whether Covid-19 can be spread by asymptomatic carriers by simply exhaling--possibly spewing small clusters of virion particles that could potentially linger in the air for more than a few seconds.  In theory, one could inhale some virulent bioaerosol and perhaps become infected; or perhaps somewhat immune.  The experts disagree.  Uncertainty reigns!

When uncertainty prevails and social anxiety is aroused to widespread panic, we cope in our own way.

To those of us who cope by holding steady to our course, maintaining routine, and soldiering on despite the threat to ourselves and others, I think there is a risk in doing that. The inherent confirmation bias in our athletic identity is keen to keep up our exercise since it is essential to our fitness, health and happiness. We are apt to perceive a diminished degree of risk in associating with the healthy folks we go out to play with all the time.

To those of us who cope with real threats by taking greater precautions to reduce exposure to infection, I think there is a risk in letting our fears claim our lives.  No one lives well under chronic stress.  No matter what precautions we take now, predictions range from 40% to 80% of the US population becoming infected with Covid-19 in the year ahead. But the current focus is on “flattening the curve” so all those infections are more manageable by our beleaguered health system.

So what do we do as we strive to live well under current circumstances?  Is there a sweet spot between being foolhardy and being overly cautious?

I'm not sure, but here are a couple of considerations and recommendations that I bet would serve our community well.

First, let's comply with all public health directives and advisories at this peak time of crisis.  When going out in public where people transact business or places where folks tend to congregate, wear a face mask to reduce the low, but real possibility of transmitting the virus on to others-- just in case you have become an unsuspecting, asymptomatic carrier.

Second, let's refrain from going out in groups to bike, hike, run or feed our exercise habits. Even with social distancing measures out in fresh air, riding or running together poses a potential public health risk given the latest findings.  I think it's a bad idea to risk breathing in others' effortful exhaust at this time of peak infection even if we can claim our own lane.  The more people you exercise with, the greater exposure to exponentially increasing possible vectors of transmission even though the risk of becoming infected is very low in open air environments.  My read is that most infectious disease experts would concur with this statement.  And no one knows what the actual vs. perceived risk ratio actually is.

Third, I think it is imperative that we set a good example in the public's eye.  Although I fervently argue that it is essential to our health and well-being that we get out the door to move and re-create to cope with the high stress of this global pandemic; and believe it is safe to do so in small groups when participants are cognizant of keeping their distance, I think we need to be seen as conscientious citizens acting for the common good.  Bands of privileged people out doing their thing along the public byways during the height of this public health crisis transmits an unintended message that many in the greater community are apt to judge harshly.

For these reasons, I recommend limiting your outings to just you or just two for the time being.  The one exception being family outings where all members live together.

Look, you have to decide how you're going to play it.  I think these suggestions are worthy of your consideration.  Just remember, it's not just about you.  Your choices potentially impact all of us.

We are fortunate to live here in such a beautiful part of the world where we may be able to steer clear of the worst of the contagion.    Embrace the blessings we share by being able to shelter safely, recreate outdoors, and live well despite these challenging times.

Until we can gather together again, take care of yourself and consider what you risk. Play it smart and stay well!

Jeremy,

I wholeheartedly agree. I recently read this article by Anne Hyman, president of the Potomac Peddlars Touring Club, who just happens to be both a cyclist and a PhD scientist in Biomedical Sciences and Pathobiology, focused on disease diagnosis and prevention. In the article she talks about an individual's respiratory signature, it's "the footprint we leave in the air every time we expel air from our lungs through our nose and mouth", which with a moving cyclist, turns into a "comet's tail" extending backwards from the cyclist potentially much farther back than the recommended 6' buffer zone we all know about by now. Her recommendation is that riding with other cyclists is just too risky at this point in time.

I for one have adopted two modes of cycling, solo on the road, and virtual group rides on Zwift. For my outdoor adventures, I'm staying close to home, exploring new roads that I haven't yet tried (for the past 7 years, I've been cycling primarily in the Northampton area, but many of you may know that I actually live in CT). I'm avoiding popular routes (like the bike trail!) and am giving other cyclists (I'll see 4-5 during a 2-hour ride) and pedestrians (10-15) a wide berth. I'm also keeping the risk to a minimum and avoiding any type of dangerous riding (no high-speed descents, extra caution in low visibility areas, and lots of blinky lights); I don't want to get in an accident and spend any time in a potentially overburdened and infectious hospital. Lastly, (and this is a little gross), I suffer from seasonal allergies and cycling exacerbates them. Consequently, I generate a lot of phlegm and need to get rid of it. I unleash my snot rockets in remote areas, out of sight of anyone, (checking behind first), lest I perpetuate the stereotype that all cyclists are privileged and selfish road hogs, constantly in the way, with no regard for others.

Normally, at this time of year, I'd be 100% on the road, but I'm spending about half of my hours on the bike on Zwift, usually in a group ride either organized by a local rider (thanks Michael Bello and Al Donahue) or one of the larger group rides listed publicly on the Zwift Events page. In both cases, I'll use the Discord voice chat service to be able to talk to fellow riders as we work out together. These virtual rides coupled with the voice chat satisfy my need for companionship while on the bike.

As a club, we have cancelled all group rides including our Tuesday series, the Massochistah has been postponed, and the 2020 Tour of the Hilltowns has been cancelled. We are hopeful that our fall events will happen, and that we will be able to begin riding together soon. Only time will tell what "soon" means, but at this point, it looks like April is a wash, and May doesn't look much better.

Stay Healthy and Safe! ...and see you online.

This is great all of the precautions that people are taking. I would like to point out that one goes crazy enough with all of the screen time we are now having to add with on-line teaching. Riding on the rollers in the basement is pretty bad but I do it when that’s the only option. Zwift is very expensive.  It’s tough enough to pay for the equipment I want to ride out on the road. I really can’t see spending that much to slightly improve the already bad indoor riding experience.

Thanks for the comment and especially the link Charlie. I have smart friends who have made their own calculation and feel that riding side by side is OK. I assume that the Respiratory Plume that Anne Hyman mentions can just as well go sideways as backwards if the wind is right. I'll share that link.

See you on Zwift!

Jeremy,

My thought is that the 6' radius that we've all had drilled into us lately applies to situations where there is no ambient airflow. Once you're moving, or there's wind in the equation, things change. Put another way, if you were infected and didn't want to infect others around you, would you stand upwind or downwind from them? As for side to side, who knows? My feeling is that it's not worth the risk right now.

I know that many of us are craving human interactions and a return to normalcy, but for now, we have to satisfy that need for human contact in other ways. As far as I know, there's no way to spread a virus via Zwift, FaceTime, or a Zoom meeting!

Charlie,

Thanks for posting the article by the local Potomac Pedalers Cycling Club.  This is my club.  I want to share this video on research testing of how talking can spread the virus.

Powerful laser technology reveals normally invisible saliva droplets that are generated by speech and are able to transmit the virus that causes COVID-19. ht...
Take care and see you on Zwift.  Oh, is anyone interested in a 5:30 am ride on Tues or Thur?

Take care,

@Joe - the cost of Zwift certainly has to factor into the equation. The Zwift subscription is $15 per month, and you can cancel at any time. And there are other equipment costs too depending on your setup. I for one am an enthusiastic proponent of the service and happy to help educate others. It's not for everyone for sure, and there are other virtual training services as well (most of which I have *not* yet tried), but I find it hugely helpful for my mental well being during the off season, especially now.

@patty - thanks for sharing that video. It's really not that surprising to know that speaking can spread saliva. How many times have you been hit with a little saliva when talking with someone? When I was a kid, we used to say "say it, don't spray it"!

Charlie,

I haven't seen this being offered anywhere yet, but was wondering if any of the training platforms have considered offering club memberships. It would offer a nice perk, and incentive, for local club membership.

Roger

Roger,

I'm not sure what you mean Roger. Are you talking about some type of service discount? I know that Zwift is in the middle of rolling out some clubs features, but I don't think that there's any type of financial incentive or financial break on the monthly fee.

No discount Zwift memberships to my knowledge. There is no financial in incentive to do so. Although there are group activities, it is designed around individual memberships, leaderboards, results, etc.

Charlie,

That's what I had in mind where the club could purchase a membership at a rate discounted from regular individual memberships. I imagine it would have to take into consideration the number of members a club had, and would probably entail a higher membership fee, but if discounted enough could provide incentive for joining the club. Just a thought.

Just found this online, which basically says if you're riding "hard", you need to leave about 20 meters between you and your fellow riders.

Here's a fun NCC team building idea: we set up a fund from where we pay the monthly zwift fee for people that might not be able to afford it, anonymously (somehow. I'm not sure how to do so, but I would volunteer to find out if it's doable).

Another fun idea: lets buy and raffle some smart trainers (maybe get them donated?)

Before I bought a smart trainer that was advertised in this same NCC list ($150 buck, best purchase I've made in a while) I was riding on zwift on rollers, via the regular garmin sensors I already had. I had no variable resistance, and therefore zwift sometimes thought I was putting 600 watts, but it was better than not riding. If anyone wants my rollers, I'll trade them for a (closed) bottle of gatorade.

"See you" on Saturday morning, I hope,

Jaime

Hello all,

An interesting article to thing about the pandemic in the US:

Sadly, it is not safe to ride in groups yet. Maybe in a couple of weeks when we will be in the other side of this curve we could start the group rides again. :)

All the best,
Be safe and stay healthy!

I really appreciate that every single person in this thread agrees that group riding is out right now. I've seen friend's lamenting that their communities aren't all on board - in Boston and Colorado, elsewhere. A bright spot in a hard time. Proud to be a part of this crew. Can't wait for a ripping WNR once this is all over!  Hope everyone is doing well.

Best,
Christin

Just got very real.

My good friend Mark passed away last night. He was a healthy cyclist — we did the 5 Boro ride last year.

Group rides are just not worth the risk.

Stay safe,

That is heartbreaking, and a reminder that none of us are immune.

The WNR will only start when it is safe - but that will be a debate and personal choice for the future.
I would love to read what people are doing in its stead - perhaps posted on the group bike rides discussion page.
