Hi all,

We’re looking for a few more interested and qualified judges to complete our beautiful panel this year.  If you’ve an interest in any of the books listed below, won’t you consider joining us?

Here’s a quick sketch of how it works:

Scoring is on five parameters, along the lines of what you’d expect, with comments to anchor the numerical scores in strengths and weaknesses of the book. A worksheet supports the process. Final scores and comments are submitted via online form, due in by October 15.

Any books you judge are yours to keep. (Or to add to your library’s collection, if you would prefer.)

As a thank-you, judges are invited to attend IPNE’s all-virtual annual conference, which runs this year Nov 1 and 2. The sessions are also recorded.

INFORMATIONAL NONFICTION

A comprehensive history of Boston / two copies left
A critical examination of policies and practices over time, and the central role of density, diversity, and urban design in the development of this city. Plenty of historic photos throughout. An extensive list of sources and a richly detailed index. Quite a beautiful and extensive researched hardback.

An exploration of the intellectual history of the Haitian Revolution  / one copy left
This history situates the revolution within the intellectual and political context of its day. Written by a scholar, published by a university press. Well-researched, with end notes and a robust index.

A comprehensive survey of what the science says about hair loss  / one copy left
Everything you’ve always wanted to know about hair loss: what the current science says about why hair thins and falls out, and a review of the current methods for slowing down, preventing, and reversing that loss. Appendices, glossary, references, index. Moderate length. A sharp hardcover.

A guide to an often-overlooked method of generating a passive income stream  / one copy left
An exploration of private money lending. Comprehensive and detailed. Appendices, glossary, references, index.

GENRE FICTION

Mystery-thriller / one copy left
A potentially genre-bending mystery-thriller, with paranormal elements. Complex and engrossing, say some readers. Gritty. With plenty of philosophical aspects woven in. Some readers love it; some don’t. We’re looking for a professional’s evaluation. (Note: some graphic scenes of sex and violence.)

Political eco-thriller / two copies left
A potentially compelling and suspenseful read involving the fight to save a town and its way of life. At stake as well is the global balance of energy. Readers are raving about it. What say the professionals? That’s the take on it we need.
