Hi NEBRA Promoters,

I was recently contacted by some folks who run the Massachusetts Senior Games about finding a venue for their bike race, and I said I'd mention it to this group. More information below, but if anyone has any ideas for this group, let me know and I can put you in touch with them.

Background:
  • The Massachusetts Senior Games (https://www.maseniorgames.org/) run across multiple sports to award championships and ultimately qualify for nationals every 2 years.
  • They run 4 cycling events:
    • 5KM TT
    • 10KM TT
    • 20KM Mass start race / Crit
    • 40KM mass start race / crit
  • They typically have been running them at a municipal airport in Chicopee, but have run into issues with the quality of the course.
  • They have very low reg numbers, usually around 20-25 total.
  • They usually hold the race in September

What they're looking for:
  • A low cost place where they can reasonably hold their race.
What I proposed / shared with them:
  • I shared my arrangement at Devens, but I don't think they could run the event on their own given their reg. numbers
  • I offered to add their event on to Devens, as it reasonably meets their requirements minus the TT events, but warned the course can be pretty challenging.
  • I also recommended they talk to promoters of both Wells Ave and Wompy as potentially working with those venues for what they're looking for.

Thanks, see you all on the NEBRA meeting tomorrow!

This is the same format as the CT games that have been held in New Britain for a while now.  Yes, very low attendance; and would probably be best served by one of the training races arenas in the state (Wompatuck, Wells Ave, Hadley/Northampton).

The Blue Hills club ran a couple of full day races at Wompatuck many years ago after they lost their venue in Canton.  After the second year, me and the other officials decided that venue wasn’t really suitable for a full day race.  Parking was an issue for a lot of vehicles and we had problems getting an emergency vehicle in.  For 2 races with the small field sizes expected, it wouldn’t be a problem to have the races there.  Since the Blue Hill races, the park opened up a small parking lot down the road from the loop which could handle the cars and keep the access road clear.
