On site USAC officials training opportunity

Hi All,

Just doing a temperature check.

USAC has approached all the velodromes about ways to eliminate barriers to having USAC sanctioned events.

One thing that was offered was FREE onsite training at our location (New England) provided we had 10 new officials to train.  This would be geared towards track specific events but would qualify anyone for a C level official.  So you’re likely to get more comprehensive training here.  They are offering to cover the 1st year cost of new officials licenses.  Similar to what NEBRA just offered.

This might be an opportunity for example to get track officials to a CX race offseason & vice versa?

Full disclosure, getting officials for over 30 events is a pain point for us despite offering stipends & being non-USAC.

Hi David,

Can you please tell us what is necessary to be a USAC Track Official? As the most barebones technical basic tasks they do. That may help in encouraging people to travel for a thirty minute event at $90/day plus mileage

For example, I would list a USAC CX Officials technical basics are:
- uphold the rulebook
- use math to determine how many laps
- certify results
- make sure the event is up to quality standard

Considering how there are not enough USAC Officials as it is in the northeast, cracking that puzzle of “more officials makes everyone happier” and then coaxing the increased pool to do track may be a better sell. That or a BBQ, a thirty minute event to officiate is certainly a pitch and anything to sweeten the deal helps

Track meets are usually in the 2-3 hour range, depending upon the schedule and number of riders.

Whoops, I think I misread thirty events as thirty minutes. Sorry, David! Having done ECCC spring and RDXC, I feel your pain

Also 2-3 hours is a way better sell. More good information on what being a USAC Track official is!

Hi Ben,

Alan beat me to one answer but to add there’s typically 4 events per field per Omnium.  So 8 races in that timeframe for 2 fields.

What I’m trying to do here is extend to everyone what was offered us as a velodrome provided there are 10 takers (we already have a number ready to sign up).  NEBRA made a similar offer at the last meeting but it would be online vs in person.  If you’re a person with the same learning style as I have in person is preferred.  As a newbie to NEBRA we’re trying to offer something to the community if there’s interest.

I’m not nearly proficient in USAC officials or promoters terminology as I am as a racer.

I’m also not trying to hide we have an additional interest in getting our C level officials more focused training for track but it’s still a C level certification that can be used for any discipline (CX,Road,MTB).
