Assistant Professor / Dissertation Research Librarian

The Graduate Center, The City University of New York (CUNY)

 

The Dissertation Research Librarian will provide responsive, effective, and innovative coordination of the library’s collection, archiving, and distribution of dissertations, theses, and capstone projects (ETDs). The Dissertation Research Librarian also assists students and faculty in adapting to the evolving digital scholarly communication landscape. This position reports to Associate Professor / Associate Librarian for Public Services and Scholarly Communication and is tenure track.

 

Duties include but are not limited to:

·         Determines best practices for ETD submission and approval, develops and documents procedures, and coordinates workflows;

·         Checks and approves all ETD submissions, corresponding with submitters as necessary to ensure completeness and correctness;

·         Collects and organizes necessary files for ETD processing and ensures adherence to author-determined embargoes;

·         Creates instructional materials, offers in-person and online instruction about the deposit process, and provides one-on-one assistance as necessary;

·         Provides one-on-one guidance and workshop-based instruction for graduate authors regarding copyright (fair use, licensing, etc.) and tools for research management (citation management tools, file management tools, etc.);

·         Builds and maintains relationships with Graduate Center offices involved in degree conferment;

·         Communicates with students, alumni, and faculty about all aspects of the Graduate Center ETD collections; formulates workflows to allow alumni to make their dissertations open access;

·         Consults with creators of digital/non-textual works to anticipate successful archiving of those works;

·         Communicates and collaborates with CUNY’s Office of Library Services regarding best practices, new services, and new technologies for ETD management;

·         Trains and supervises full-time or part-time staff and/or library interns in support of graduate research or thesis management as assigned;

·         Performs other duties as assigned.

 

Reference and Instruction:

·         Provides reference service in person, by chat, by email, and by phone;

·         Serves as liaison to assigned subjects (specific liaison duties include performing outreach, providing group and one-on-one instruction, analyzing and building collections, and helping faculty and students self-archive their work in the institutional repository).

·         Teaches course-specific and topical workshops in person and online.

 

Professional Development:

·         Maintains professional currency in ETD archiving, distribution, and repository management;

·         Stays abreast of tools and best practices for managing major research projects;

·         Produces scholarly research and provides professional and academic service in accordance with the library's tenure and promotion criteria.

 

QUALIFICATIONS: Master's in Library Science (MLS), Master's in Library Information Studies (MLIS), or closely related discipline from an ALA-accredited institution, with a second graduate degree required.  Also required is the ability to work with others for the good of the institution.

 

A preferred candidate should have:

·         Familiarity with institutional repositories.

·         Familiarity with advanced researchers using primary and/or archival sources.

·         Working knowledge of digitization standards and formats.

·         Working knowledge of rights management and academic publishing practices.

·         Demonstrated ability to establish and to coordinate complicated workflows.

·         Excellent communication and problem-solving skills.

·         Willingness and capability to produce scholarship and perform service required for tenure.

·         Teaching experience.
