Hi all,

What do you require for margins for ETDs? We still require 1.5" on the left but since all documents are published electronically and not necessarily bound, the margins could be adjusted. I checked with ProQuest/UMI because they print double-sided and this doesn't work with a 1.5" left margin -- some of our students would like to order hardcopies but I wouldn't currently recommend it. The support team let me know they recommend 1" all around and, since the binding pinch is narrow, their printed copies look fine. I haven't seen a printed copy so I'm not sure how a 1" all around margin looks.

Any input is appreciated!

We require margins to be at least 1” all the way around.  Students have the option of choosing 1.5 on the left, if they choose.

At UT Austin, we require 1.25 inches all around, but we give a little leeway on that. Still, we don’t want any margin smaller than an inch on any side.

Hi Folks,

We use 1.25” for left/right and 1.00” for top/bottom. We do not require a bound library copy. If the student wants bound copies, it is their after submission and approval formatting responsible. Cheers!

Hi Megan,

At USC, the left and right margin must be 1.25 inches, while the top and bottom must be 1 inch. We also do not accept bound copies, though some students opt to order them for various reasons. Of those students who choose to have copies bound, many of them order from ProQuest, but many will just take their files to local binders, including the copy shop we have on campus. If students want to order bound copies outside of ProQuest, they can obviously modify their documents however they want and have them bound, but the version of record will be the PDF that meets university requirements.

We also require 1.5 sides, and 1" top margins.  And we do not do in-house binding, but refer them to online binding companies.  Since they are all electronic now, I am not sure what measures students are taking to modify their document when having it bound.
