Hello ETD Colleagues,

This message is being sent to summarize previously shared  information about North American universities that have stopped sending graduate scholarship to UMI/Proquest; never sent such; or have changed what was previously a mandate to a newer Proquest-optional policy.  The below information has been shared with  this group already via numerous postings over time, so longer-term ETD-L followers may find nothing new in this list.

*An important sidebar to this message* is that, after a robust discussion of PQ optional policies that recently engaged our colleagues who follow the ALA Scholarly Communications discussion list, an offer was received to host a current version of the list on a well-established organizational website. Plans are afoot to repot the list to the new site where it can continue to get sustained care and feeding. All data from the TDL-hosted blog and archived postings of such will be captured and ported over to the new site.  Please stay tuned.

In the meantime, here is what's been made available to the ETD and Scholarly Communications communities to date (at least to my knowledge: additional resources may be suggested by other members of this community!):

(1) Curated list of PQO or NQ universities:

Originally maintained by yours truly via the "Free US ETDs" blog that was hosted on the Texas Digital Library platform for about two years but was ultimately closed due to changes in professional assignment and institutional support.  Apparently, this resource was not technically shut off by TDL after the announced blog closure, so this version does include a wee bit of data posted by institutions themselves. Not sure how persistent this legacy site will remain available online:

(2) Archived copy of the above, deposited in Texas A&M digital repository at time the "The Free US ETDs" blog was closed. Does not include schools that posted to the blog after its official closure

(3) Published, peer-reviewed JLSC article about ETD management and publication including discussion of PQO and NQ policies at various research universities (Clement and Rascoe, 2013)

(4) Published column about PQ optional policies at various universities and significance of allowing student choice (Clement, 2013)

(5) Poster presentation at Texas ETD Association conference about student uptake of PQ once policy shifted to optional (Potvin, 2011)

Cheers,

Gail
