Hello all,

A few years ago, there was a “no-Quest” movement going on in the ETD community.  However, as with all things ETD, change can happen quickly.  My dean has asked me to investigate what other institutions are doing regarding mandatory ProQuest submission.

  1. Does your institution currently require it?
  2. How long has it been required, i.e., is this a recent requirement or has it always been required?
  3. Does it included both dissertations and theses (masters)?

Also, if you wouldn’t mind, I would like to know why mandatory deposit is required?  Just a brief explanation would be helpful.

Thanks so much.

Jill

Hi Jill,

    1. Does your institution currently require it?
      1. Yes - PhDs published to proquest (“publication” via PQ and our IR is a requirement for graduation for PhDs).
      2. No (but…) - Masters – submitted via PQ and then into our IR, but not published to PQ. We just use it for workflow.
    1. How long has it been required, i.e., is this a recent requirement or has it always been required?
      1. Submission via and publication to PQ (for PhDs) required since 2017, when it replaced our homegrown thesis manager. Some ETDs were published to PQ before that and I think the grad school’s intention was to submit them all to PQ, but I think that was not completely consistent. We collected everything we could get into our IR – again a little spotty.
    1. Does it included both dissertations and theses (masters)?
      1. See above!

    Cheers,

    Gail

    Hi Jill,

We require the submission of graduate theses and dissertations. We formerly used ProQuest Administrator for all entries but students were confused by the hoops they had to jump through on the site and we really didn't want to make our students submit to a subscription-based database. We reviewed our process and created a homegrown system where we have the students submit their works and the university has a permanent record of the work submitted for posterity. We currently use Scholars Crossing, the Digital Commons platform, as our main repository. We transfer the student information from our homegrown system into Scholars Crossing (https://digitalcommons.liberty.edu/) to make it available through open access. We have given our students the option to submit to ProQuest Dissertations and Theses if they desire.

Masters theses and doctoral dissertations have been required for as long as I have been in this position, over six years. Some departments are more diligent in following the requirement than others but it has improved.

Our Graduate School made Graduate ETDs a requirement to build Liberty University's research reputation. It also assists in building each graduate program and allows us to share our student research through open access.

    I hope this is helpful.
