Hello,

Could you please share if you embed any metadata into your files?  We use PDF/A, and embed metadata by copying and pasting into the description tab, as well as the custom fields tab.

It is tedious and time-consuming for work-study students.  Our institutional repository is managed by the university archives.  From what I know, it's generally accepted in archives to try to embed metadata within a file in case that file were to be seperated from an external metadata document, like an excel file.  However, I believe many larger institutions may have their IR department separate from their archives, so perhaps this is not a standard practice in IR.

Below is what our embedded metadata looks like.  All this information is kept in a separate excel file, which is used as an inventory and also to upload the files.

Is this a standard practice at your IR?  Thank you

Hi Jason,

We use the VRA-developed tools to embed metadata into image files. The tools are free and work as an extension to Adobe Bridge.  They are based around the VRA metadata scheme, so we do the best we can to crosswalk to DC.  The tools also embed as IPTC. There is also import/export functionality to make batch work easier.

These tools are community supported and the VRA embedded metadata communities (metametadata, basically) could be a great source for your investigation.
