Description:
We're at an important stage in the history of scholarship. The internet has dramatically accelerated the potential pace and scale of communication and collaboration, and we now have the computational capabilities to discover complex relationships across many diverse sources of knowledge. This will certainly usher in a new era of knowledge discovery, but at the same time, scholarship is at risk.
Academic incentives are driven by centuries-old publishing practices where professional success is gauged by what is publishable rather than what is rigorous, reproducible, replicable, and reusable. Openness is an optimal strategy to addressing the challenges we face, but barriers to being open still exist. An approach along with practical steps forward will be discussed.
During this brown bag session, we will hear from Dr. Jeffrey Spies, a Double Domer and principal consultant and founder of 221B Consulting. He uses is background in computer science, statistics, and psychology to inform his work in areas of research technology, methodology, and policy. Jeff is the co-founder and former Chief Technology Officer of the Center for Open Science, where led a number of projects, including the development of the Open Science Framework and the large-scale Reproducibility Project: Psychology. He regularly speaks on topics of openness, reproducibility, and research workflow including testifying on these topics at a United States House congressional hearing.

Also, just a reminder that we will be having our November policy meeting today at 5:00 PM. We will be having food catered from Aladdin's Eatery, including vegetarian and gluten free options.
SPI@ND November Policy Forum: Saving Recycling from the Trash BinHow much of your “recycling” ends up in a landfill? Recycling has long been touted as a solution for many of our sustainability issues, however, we must deal with low recycling rates, high rates of contamination, and fewer markets abroad for our recycling. Sustainability offices and recycling companies must craft new policies to craft a new way forward for the future of recycling. Join SPI on Thursday, Nov 21st at 5:00 PM in Room 106 Duncan Student Center in welcoming Notre Dame’s Caitlin Jacobs and Borden Waste Away’s Logan Miller in a discussion about the future of recycling.

SAVE THE DATE: Please join us next week Tuesday (11/26) at 7:30 PM for our second Michiana Science Cafe of the semester titled NextGen Human-Drone Partnerships in Emergency Response with guest speaker Dr. Cleland-Huang.
Videos of drones delivering packages or surveying fires and floods are now commonplace. But drones can be used for so much more! This talk explores the next generation of drone use in society, where drones participate in emergency response scenarios as fully-fledged, autonomous, team members. This talk explores several questions. "What do human-drone partnerships look like in an emergency response scenario?" "How do drones make autonomous decisions?" and finally, "How would this use of drones shape our communities in terms of safety, privacy, and low-altitude traffic?" Bring your questions and comments, and be prepared to engage in a lively discussion of NextGen Drone use in our community.
