Hi all,

Happy almost fall break! SPI would like to share some important updates/events coming up in the next few weeks:

One of our BIGGEST fundraisers of the year is right around the corner. SPI will be teaming up with the Biology Graduate Student Organization (BGSO) and Integrated Biomedical Sciences Graduate Student Organization (IBMS-GSO)  to host a concession stand at the ND vs. Virginia Tech football game on Saturday, November 2nd

There are several roles to fill and we can use all the help we can get! You can sign up to help set up, grill food, take orders, sell T-shirts, float around in between, clean up, or just help out wherever is necessary. We ask that you sign up for 2-hour shifts. Please sign-up in the designated “volunteer” slots using the link below.

Indicate if you are a member of BGSO, IBMS or SPI. If your sign up to grill food please also indicate you have been food-safety trained. To become trained, click the link to a short training presentation inside the sign-up sheet, as well as the quiz for official certification. If you have any questions feel free to shoot us an email (scip...@nd.edu).

The SPI local committee has planned our first Michiana Science Cafe of the year, which will be held on Tuesday, October 29th at 7:30 PM at the Chicory Cafe of Mishawaka. Join us to hear from Notre Dame professor Dr. Jennifer Hames as she talks about her research on treating peoples' fear of heights through virtual reality interventions, and her work on the “high place phenomenon" (where people experience a sudden urge to jump from a high place) and how it relates to suicidality.

Our next monthly policy forum will be held on Thursday, October 31st at 5:00 PM in 106 Duncan Student Center. Halloween is the perfect time add a dash of fear on our plates. Join us as we welcome Kayla Hurd, Ph.D student of Anthropology, to open a discussion of her research on the culture and stigma of insects as a food source and a possible solution to food scarcity. As always (bug-free) food and light refreshments will be provided.

What to do with your PhD-page-001.jpg
On Thursday, November 7th, SPI is sponsoring an upcoming professional development event on campus: What to do with your PhD? This event is free to graduate students and consists of a series of panels highlighting career tracks in Academia, Industry, and Government. Lunch provided with pre-registration.

Save the Dates:
- SPI will be hosting a film screening of Paris to Pittsburgh on Wednesday, November 6th at 6 PM, location TBA.
- Our November Policy Forum meeting will be held on Thursday, November 21st in 106 Duncan Student Center
