The Kaneb Center is pleased to invite you to take part in all of our activities this semester. This week's email includes information about the Instructors of Color Learning Community, our upcoming workshops, and a new blog post. To view our full fall workshop schedule, visit our Events page

TA & Graduate Instructors of Color Learning Community

The TA & Graduate Instructors of Color Learning Community will meet on Wednesday October 27, 3:30 - 4:30 pm in DeBartolo Hall 336. We will discuss work/life balance post-COVID and strategies for promoting wellbeing in the classroom and the institution more broadly.

In this intellectual community of peers we support each other's formations as teacher-scholars by listening to and affirming classroom experiences, discovering and sharing skills, and learning from diverse pedagogical perspectives. This program is co-sponsored by The Graduate School.

You do not have to attend all meetings to be a part of the group! Meetings are scheduled for a variety of times/dates to accommodate as many of our schedules as possible. If you are interested in joining this group or have any other questions, please contact Dominique Vargas (dvar...@nd.edu) for more information.

Upcoming Workshops

We invite you to sign up for any of the following pedagogy workshops this fall. For more information and to register, click here

Faculty Panel: Enhancing Learning with Low Stakes Assessments
A panel of faculty from Math, Chemistry and Neuroscience will share lessons learned when moving from a few high stakes assessments (exams) to more frequent low stakes assessments (quizzes) and in one case providing a mastery-based learning opportunity. Panelists will discuss why they made the shift, how it worked, and what they will do next. Ample time will be reserved for Q&A.

Date: Wednesday, October 27
Time: 12:30-1:45 p.m.
Presenters: Moderated by Alex Ambrose, Director of Learning Research, ND Learning | Kaneb Center for Teaching Excellence

Using CIF Questions as a Tool to Improve Teaching and Learning
In this workshop, you will review and explore how you can utilize CIF questions to focus your efforts to improve teaching effectiveness and student learning.

Date: Thursday, October 28
Time: 2:00-3:15 p.m.
Presenter: Dan Hubert, Associate Program Director of Learning Outcomes Assessment, ND Learning | Kaneb Center for Teaching Excellence

Decolonizing Your Curriculum I: Overview of Practice
In recent years, there have been many calls to “decolonize your curriculum” or to “decenter your syllabus,” but what does this work actually entail? In this session, participants will gain an introduction to decolonized pedagogy and will explore ways to diversify course materials and teach to a range of student identities. We will also discuss the pitfalls of using decolonization as a metaphor for teaching and learning (Tuck & Yang, 2012).

Date: Monday, November 1
Time: 10:30-11:45 a.m.
Presenter: Alex Oxner, former Assistant Program Director for Inclusive Pedagogy, and Dominique Vargas, Postdoctoral Fellow, ND Learning | Kaneb Center for Teaching Excellence

Enhance Student Learning in Four Minutes, by Julian Chike

"Research on student learning demonstrates that leveraging the first two minutes of class and the final two minutes of class each day can significantly enhance the overall learning experience for your students. For example, consider the 'entry ticket' and 'exit ticket'..."
