TA & Graduate Instructors of Color Learning Community

The TA & Graduate Instructors of Color Learning Community will meet on Wednesday October 27, 3:30 - 4:30 pm in DeBartolo Hall 336. We will discuss work/life balance post-COVID and strategies for promoting wellbeing in the classroom and the institution more broadly.

In this intellectual community of peers we support each other's formations as teacher-scholars by listening to and affirming classroom experiences, discovering and sharing skills, and learning from diverse pedagogical perspectives. This program is co-sponsored by The Graduate School.

You do not have to attend all meetings to be a part of the group! Meetings are scheduled for a variety of times/dates to accommodate as many of our schedules as possible. If you are interested in joining this group or have any other questions, please contact Dominique Vargas (dvar...@nd.edu) for more information.

Incorporating Active Learning Techniques into Tutorials to Improve Student Learning
While utilizing active learning techniques has been demonstrated to improve students’ understanding and retention of material, determining how to best incorporate these techniques can be difficult. This workshop is designed to help graduate students responsible for conducting tutorials by providing concrete strategies for restructuring class time to make use of active learning techniques. Participants will leave the workshop with strategies for encouraging student problem solving and engagement as well as an understanding of potential pitfalls to avoid when implementing these new strategies.

Date: Monday, October 11
Time: 10:30-11:45 a.m.
Presenters: Kristi Rudenga, Director of Teaching Excellence, and Kathryn Trentadue, Graduate Associate, ND Learning | Kaneb Center for Teaching Excellence

Transparent Assignment Design
Transparent Assignment Design results in positive impact on self-efficacy and sense of belonging for all students with stronger impact on students from groups that are underrepresented in higher education. It makes learning processes explicit, fosters development of students’ metacognition, confidence, and sense of belonging, and benefits both underserved and high-achieving students.

Date: Tuesday, October 12
Time: 10:30 a.m.-11:45 p.m.
Presenter: Kristi Rudenga, Director of Teaching Excellence, and Emily Donahoe, Postdoctoral Fellow, ND Learning | Kaneb Center for Teaching Excellence

Mid-Semester Reflection: Setting Yourself Up to Finish the Semester Strong, by Kathryn Trentadue

"As Fall Break approaches, the time is ripe for instructors to pause and reflect on the semester so far. While it may seem daunting to evaluate a course as it is in progress and make adjustments midway through, taking a few moments to pause and ask yourself some questions can improve both your and your students’ experiences with the remainder of the semester..."
