Upcoming Workshops

We invite you to sign up for any of the following pedagogy workshops this spring. All workshops will take place via Zoom unless otherwise noted. For more information and to register, click here.

Hard Conversations in STEM

How can STEM content integrate with broader societal conversations and social change? How can instructors lead these discussions and help students build connections between what they’re learning in class and how they can do the most good in the world? In this workshop, we will consider principles and examples of engaging students in challenging but crucial conversations in the context of a STEM course.

Date: Tuesday, April 5
Time: 11:00 a.m. - 12:15 p.m.

Presenter:  Nancy Michael, Associate Teaching Professor of Biological Sciences & Faculty Fellow, Notre Dame Learning | Kaneb Center for Teaching Excellence

Integrative & Engaged Learning with ePortfolios

Are you interested in using electronic portfolios (ePortfolios) to engage your students? Join us for this demo and hands-on workshop on Canvas’ free ePortfolio tool. You will walk away with best teaching practices, assignment examples, and template design principles to enhance teaching, learning, and assessment.

Date: Wednesday, April 20
Time: 2:00 p.m. - 3:15 p.m.
Presenter:  G. Alex Ambrose, Director of Learning Research, and Steve Varela, Director of Teaching and Learning Technologies

Teaching for Social Justice [intended for graduate students]

Participants in this workshop will discuss strategies for effectively applying social justice practices to college-level teaching. We will practice example techniques that can be used in a variety of courses and will consider how education can be used to generate positive social change.

Date: Friday, April 22
Time: 11:00 a.m. - 12:15 p.m.

Presenter:  Julian Chike and Haley Dutmer, Graduate Associates, ND Learning | Kaneb Center for Teaching Excellence

New Blog Post

"What had I gotten myself into? In Fall 2021, I stepped in to teach a class that was already brilliantly designed by a faculty member who I admire and count among my mentors. In one of our planning meetings, the faculty member encouraged me to make the course my own, but emphasized their commitment to ungrading. I agreed enthusiastically, but after our Zoom call ended, I started to panic. To be clear, I embraced ungrading in principle. I can’t count the times that I’ve vehemently argued against standardized testing and punitive grading policies. ..."
