Graduate Students and Postdocs,
Join the Kaneb Center Team!

The ND Learning | Kaneb Center seeks graduate students and postdocs with interest and experience in teaching to serve as Kaneb Center Postdoctoral and Graduate Associates (PGAs) for the 2021-2022 academic year. PGAs facilitate workshops on effective teaching, develop teaching resources, and contribute to other activities to help graduate students and postdocs grow as teachers. This position is an excellent opportunity to develop as an instructor, a professional, and a leader.

See the attached flyer for details about the position and application process. Applications are due on Friday, April 9. For more information, contact Kristi Rudenga at krud...@nd.edu.

Spring Workshops

We invite you to sign up for any of the following pedagogy  workshops this  spring. All  workshops will be held virtually in Zoom. For more information and to register, click  here

TLT: Tech Tools for Engaging Students
This workshop will introduce participants a variety of technology tools that can help drive student engagement. Poll Everywhere enables instructors to measure students' understanding of key concepts during class discussions. Panopto offers a feature to embed quiz questions in video assignments, so students are active viewers of that content. Perusall engages students in close, social reading of texts. Due to time constraints we will skim the surface, and offer interested faculty opportunities to consult with academic technology experts for more in-depth exploration.

Date: Thursday, March 25, 2021
Time: 2:20 - 3:35 p.m.
Presenter(s):  Kael Kanczuzewski, Teaching and Learning Technologies, and  Crystal DeJaegher, OIT Special Projects

Supporting International Students
International students enrich higher education by bringing their languages, cultures, and perspectives to the classroom. In doing so, they heighten social awareness, improve cultural literacies, and broaden intellectual development for their peers (Wong 2018; Luo and Jamieson-Drake 2013). However, while international students contribute much to their classrooms and campuses, they also confront many challenges. This workshop will explore inclusive teaching practices that can be incorporated into classrooms across disciplines and teaching contexts in order to support international students. Specific focus areas will include communicating clear expectations, leading effective discussions, and embracing students’ diverse language and writing abilities.

Date: Friday, March 26, 2021
Time: 11:10 a.m. - 12:25 p.m.
Presenter(s):   Alex Oxner, ND Learning | Kaneb Center and  Lisa Oglesbee, Center for the Study of Languages and Cultures

Effective Grading and Efficient Feedback
In this workshop, participants will learn about the different uses and purposes of “grading” and providing feedback. We will introduce strategies for evaluating your grading criteria, incorporating multiple approaches to providing feedback, and encouraging students to engage with the feedback they receive. We will also address a few technological tools and techniques that may save you time in providing meaningful feedback to students.

Date: Wednesday, March 31, 2021
Time: 2:20 - 3:35 p.m.
Presenter(s):    Alex Oxner and Alex Ambrose, ND Learning | Kaneb Center
