Notre Dame Learning Speaker Series:
Lessons for Building Community from Social Neuroscience

Join us for our ND Learning Speaker Series workshop with Dr. Sarah Rose Cavanagh.

A sense of community in the classroom contributes to effective learning, likely through benefits to student motivation. While traditional pedagogical literature speaks to methods of building community within the classroom, we can also look outside our intellectual silos to other academic disciplines researching how human beings form and maintain effective collaborative groups. In this interactive session, we’ll consider powerful research investigating team dynamics in simulated space missions, the social neuroscience of how the brain embeds our social others in our very sense of self, and even how honeybees make collective decisions together. We will work together to understand and apply these lessons to the work of the higher education classroom.

Date: MondayApril 4
Time:  8 a.m. - 10:30 a.m.

Register here.

Hard Conversations in STEM

How can STEM content integrate with broader societal conversations and social change? How can instructors lead these discussions and help students build connections between what they’re learning in class and how they can do the most good in the world? In this workshop, we will consider principles and examples of engaging students in challenging but crucial conversations in the context of a STEM course.

Date: Tuesday, April 5
Time: 11:00 a.m. - 12:15 p.m.

Presenter:  Nancy Michael, Associate Teaching Professor of Biological Sciences & Faculty Fellow, Notre Dame Learning | Kaneb Center for Teaching Excellence

Integrative & Engaged Learning with ePortfolios

Are you interested in using electronic portfolios (ePortfolios) to engage your students? Join us for this demo and hands-on workshop on Canvas’ free ePortfolio tool. You will walk away with best teaching practices, assignment examples, and template design principles to enhance teaching, learning, and assessment.

New Blog Post

Review: The Spark of Learning by Sarah Rose Cavanagh by Emily Donahoe

"In The Spark of Learning: Energizing the College Classroom with the Science of Emotion, Sarah Rose Cavanagh argues that “if you want to grab the attention of your students, mobilize their efforts, prolong their persistence, permanently change how they see the world, and maximize the chance that they will retain the material you’re teaching them over the long term, then there is no better approach than to target their emotions.” ..."

The Essentials of Gamification by Kuang-Chen Hsu
"Since the early 2000s, the concept of gamification has been a trending topic, gaining much hype as a means of making complex learning fun and engaging to motivate learners. ..."
