Dear Colleagues,
Our TC, jointly with TC Hybrid Systems, is participating in the trial run of a new CSS initiative aimed at creating TC-specific outstanding student paper prizes.
A prize will be awarded to one of the CDC’2020 papers whose primary author is a student in our TC or TC Hybrid Systems. The nomination and selection of the award takes place AFTER the CDC’2020 and will be announced at the CDC’2021.
The nomination process is simple: Any TC member can nominate (including self-nomination) a paper to the prize through an email to me. The email needs to contain a statement that the student is the primary author of the paper. The deadline for nomination is
JANUARY 31st, 2021
For this trial run, the student authors do not need to be a member of our TC at the time the paper is presented at the CDC'2020, but should become a TC member by the time the paper is nominated.
Please refer to more details on the award below.

1. Concept and rationale:
a. These prizes fulfills two roles:
i. Recognize young talent associated with a technical area
ii. Promote student membership and participation in the TCs
b. Each prize is given to a student that is the primary author of a paper presented at the CDC[1] and also a member for a CSS TC.
c. Each TC has its own prize[2] whose title includes the name of the TC, “Automotive TC Outstanding Student Paper Prize”
d. The prize does not include a monetary component, just a certificate.
e. The prize should be connected to a conference (rather than IEEE) to provide maximum flexibility.
2. Who qualifies:
a. The awardees must be IEEE student members that belong to a TC and attended the conference (or, at least, registered).
3. Timeline:
a. The prize is given at the CDC of year N+1 for a paper presented at the CDC of year N. This gives more time to the prize selection committee, which only needs to consider papers that were accepted and appeared in the proceedings. It also minimizes the burden posed on the CDC organization.
b. To simplify logistics, the prize is presented at a TC-sponsored event, rather than at the CDC awards ceremony.
4. Nomination: The goal is to have a minimalist nomination process with minimal workload to the conference organizers.
a. Any TC member can nominate a paper to the prize through an email to the TC chair. The email needs to contain a statement that the primary author of the paper was a student at the time of paper submission.
b. Self-nominations are allowed, but the nomination email must be carbon-copied to all the authors.
c. The TC chair is responsible to advertise the prize widely within the TC, including sending a yearly email to all TC members calling for nominations.
5. Selection Process:
a. The selection committee consists of 4-5 persons selected by TC chair in consultation with CSS Awards Chair and/or the Vice-President for Technical Activities.
b. Members of the selection committee cannot nominate any paper and cannot be co-authors in any of the papers under consideration for the prize.
c. The selection process is mostly managed by TC chair, who makes a recommendation to the general conference chair. The certificate is signed by the general conference chair and the TC chair. This guarantees oversight by an independent entity outside the committee.
d. Final decisions on the prizes should be reported in the yearly TC report to the CSS Board of Governors (BoG).
