Indigenous experiences and priorities in kelp stewardship and restoration
Morpho: Kelp Restoration Working Group
Abstract
Indigenous peoples around the world have and continue to nurture cold-water seascapes. Healthy kelp forests are vital parts of thriving cold-water ecosystems. Indigenous people living with or having kinship responsibilities to the health of cold-water seascapes know that kelp forests need to be protected and restored. Marine management plans for cold water ecosystems of unceded lands and seas of Western USA, Western Canada, Patagonia, Southern Australia, New Zealand, and South Africa need to consider the health of kelp forests. Historically, the frameworks for planning around kelp forest stewardship and restoration have excluded the voices of Indigenous peoples. As a result, Indigenous peoples’ perspectives, roles and cultural responsibilities in projects and programs within their ancestral lands have been overlooked. Though this issue has been acknowledged in various national and international agreements or principles, this gap persists. To address this issue, we must co-develop and co-manage projects, share knowledge, and ultimately, reduce barriers to self determination and management of marine resources within traditional territories. This talk aims to outline some lessons learnt from bringing together a diverse group (including knowledge outside of western science) for a workshop focused on this issue.
Bio
The workshop is co-chaired by working group members Kataya Barrett, Alejandra González, Angelo Villa-Gomez, and Lynn Lee, respectively from unceded lands and seas of Australia, Chile, USA, and Canada. The workshop is also co-facilitated by working group coordinator Aaron Eger from Australia and Canada and a local Indigenous facilitator from California. The ultimate goal of this workshop is to co-create a roadmap for an action plan on kelp forest restoration based on participatory, inclusive, equitable, sustainable, and resilient communities.
