Assessing long term drought effects on Guadalquivir Estuary nursery function and fisheries production based on GUADALQUIVIR_LTER (1997-2027) program data.

Abstract:
As climate change is decreasing freshwater supplies globally, it is necessary to understand the relationship between freshwater flowing through estuarine and coastal ecosystems on marine fisheries productivity. At the Gulf of Cádiz (SW Spain) -an area of special relevance for Spanish fisheries- the Guadalquivir Estuary is the most important nursery area for commercial fishes and crustaceans. Because of this function a Long Term Ecological Research Program -GUADALQUIVIR-LTER has been maintained monthly since 1997 to monitor the temporal and spatial evolution of abundances and biomasses of the aquatic community species -plankton, fish, and crustacean-, biodiversity and ecosystem functioning. We use 25 years GUADALQUIVIR-LTER monthly time series to evaluate the impact of droughts and floods on estuary ecosystem functioning and coastal fisheries to asses management authorities on implementing
Fisheries Ecosystem Based Management.

About the speaker:
Dr. César Vilas is a Senior Researcher leading the Fisheries Resources Department at the Andalusian Institute of Agricultural and Fisheries Research and Training (IFAPA) under the Andalusian Regional Ministry for Agriculture and Fisheries. His research focus in the ecology of coastal ecosystems, their conservation and their relationship with fisheries resources.  Since 2009 is in charge as PI of the GUADALQUIVIR-LTER program on monitoring and studying ecosystem processes, food webs and management on the Guadalquivir Estuary and its Marine Reserve. He also participates as PI on projects studying the biological oceanography of Gulf of Cádiz, management of invasive species (like blue crab) and is PI of the European Project STRAITS [https://europeantrackingnetwork.org/en/about-straits](https://europeantrackingnetwork.org/en/about-straits) to monitor animal movements using acoustic telemetry throughout Europe and especially at the Gibraltar Strait.
