What’s the procedure with the obnoxious airline forms in the case of emergency travel?

I’m glad to say I don’t have an emergency, but the time to plan for one is before it happens.  Recently, someone came into my sister’s workplace and beat up a woman.  My sister was elsewhere at the time, but it started me thinking what if it was her and I had to dash out there to help her out afterwards.  So how does that work now?

Hi Tracy – super good question! The one thing I can’t say is that I am taking an American Airlines flight Soon. When I spoke to the Disability representative, they said once I file a form with them the first time they keep it on record and I won’t have to file again.

Hope this helps!

I look forward to other answers and better solutions!

Diane.

Hi Tracy – part two of my answer.
I should have given you a little bit more information. Once I file the form with American Airlines they will give Jaxi, my guide Dog, a number. They will simply ask for her number when I make future reservations and that’s how they will keep track of her. They call it her ADA number.

Have a good day!
Diane.

A handful of airlines use open door, you submit your information to open door and when you book a flight, they will confirm it with open door that you’re traveling with an animal and that your information is up-to-date. Kind of a strange process, but I guess it works. I haven’t any problems with it yet and they notify you when your rabies needs to be updated of course mines only every three years. Some states don’t allow that though. This is when I fly with allegiant airline

Actually with American, you do need to complete the form once a year.

The best airline to get to where my sister lives is United.  Last time I used them, they did not use Open Door or anything like that.  I had to upload the form to their website.

Tracy  – According to the ACAA regulations, if you purchase your ticket within 48 hours of the flight (typical in emergencies), then the airline is supposed to allow you to fly if you just bring a completed ACAA attestation form with you to the airport on the day of travel.

That said, I have heard that some airlines that use OpenDoors have required travelers who purchased last-minute flights to go through the open doors process, even though open doors does not necessarily handle approvals in a short time window.

Some airlines, such as Delta, also allow you to provide the information on the form over the phone to an agent if you aren’t able to fill out the form electronicallly.

In short, if you purchase last-minute flights by phone, ask the agent what the process is for that airline. In any case, I always bring a copy of a completed ACAA form with me to the airport just in case, and that was helpful when one time I had to purchase a last-minute ticket on another airline when my flight was cancelled and I had to be ssomewhere for work before the rescheduled flight would get me there.

Finally, I am working with the airlines and service animal orrgs to implement the known service animal pilot that will allow you to get a known service animal number similar to a pre-check number that will allow you to fly without having to fill out any forms.

I hope that is helpful.

Yours,

Thanks Al.  Tat sounds like everything I need to know.  As always, you’re the man with the answers.
