Job Description

Summary

Reporting to the Provost and Senior Vice President of Academic Affairs, the Director of the Van Pelt and Opie Library collaborates with colleagues throughout the library and across the University to set priorities, assess strengths, identify challenges and opportunities, and develop educational and service strategies consonant with the University’s strategic plan. The director is responsible for identifying and enhancing partnerships with the many learning communities throughout the University to advance the University’s teaching and research mission. Overseeing communication strategies, the director broadcasts their vision to the library’s constituencies and effectively manages the financial resources of the library. Further, the director plays a leading role in developing fruitful donor relationships, identifying and cultivating external funding sources, and advocating for library needs.In addition to the above-mentioned duties, the successful director develops and coordinates policy direction for the library’s diverse collections in all formats, including but not limited to the main collection, e-resources, and archives and special collections. In concert with team leaders in relevant areas, the director works collaboratively to advance strategies that enhance support for teaching, research, publishing, and learning. The director serves as a library representative to the University and external communities and performs other duties as assigned.

Responsibilities (other duties may be assigned)

       Develop a clear direction for the library that supports the University’s and library’s evolving strategic plans.

·         Develop partnerships with the University’s colleges, schools, departments, research centers, and institutes to increase the visibility of the library while providing informational services.

·         Manage the financial resources of the library.

·         Work with the Office of Advancement to develop and maintain donor relationships.

·         Identify and cultivate external funding sources (grant writing, sponsored project management, other fundraising and development activities).

·         Keep abreast of emerging trends and developments in the organizational management and best practices in librarianship as well as academic research libraries and their administration.

·         Advocate for library needs within the University.

·         Serve as a library representative to the University and external communities.

·         Communicate the library’s vision and guide the development of strategic goals that implement that vision.

·         Supervise library team leaders.

·         Assist in the recruitment, mentoring, and retention of knowledgeable, service-oriented library staff.

·         Support and develop a collegial and professional work culture.

·         Foster a collegial and inclusive atmosphere, valuing and advancing diversity and inclusion efforts.

·         Support continued development of the library as a University and regional exemplar of Lean management and decision making.

·         Review public communications to ensure consonance with vision and culture.

·         Evaluate the effectiveness of library services and facilities with library constituencies and direct improvements to enhance their quality and efficiency.

·         Oversee the library’s assessment efforts to enable data-informed decision making.

·         Work in collaboration with Informational Technology (IT), the Center for Teaching and Learning (CTL), and other constituencies to improve library services and facilities, enhance the quality
