Hello! I’m piloting HU3519 Writing Nature this summer, track A, as an online class, and trying to get the word out to students for whom this course may be of particular interest: Foresters, ecologists, biologists, environmental engineers, geologists, outdoor enthusiasts, budding naturalists, lovers of outdoor literature, the list goes on… Please help me find these folks.

Ostensibly a creative writing class, Writing Nature focuses on the craft of environmental and nature writing. In conjunction with creative writing exercise and peer review, students will analyze a variety of exemplary texts within the genre, culminating in the production of a research-driven manuscript in either poetry, fiction, or nonfiction.

The class will help hone student’s creative and critical thinking skills, improve their writing process and craft (applicable to everything from poems to grants), teach them how to better communicate their passion and interest in nature and the environment to both public and professional audiences, and at the risk of tooting my own horn, it’ll be fun. This is also an online class, so it’s perfect for students on co-op, internship, otherwise traveling away from campus over the summer, or for anyone who might benefit from the added flexibility an online class offers.

If you or your students have questions, you can contact me directly at mbse...@mtu.edu.

Thank you for your time.

-Matt
