Description

Measurement Lab (M-Lab) is excited to announce the early launch of a new Connectivity Community of Practice (CoP) for applied Internet measurement in collaboration with Giga. The CoP will have a special focus on strengthening how school connectivity is measured and understood globally.

Grounded in open data, open tools, and open collaboration, the CoP brings together researchers, engineers, implementers, policymakers, and advocates working to ensure that connectivity measurement is:
-Technically rigorous
-Globally comparable
-Practical for real-world connectivity contexts, including underserved regions

Together, we will explore what meaningful measurement looks like for schools, align on indicators that support better decision-making, and translate open telemetry into insights that enable smarter, evidence-based connectivity planning.

What to Expect
-Community framing of the shared measurement challenges in school connectivity
-Perspectives from partners at Giga and M-Lab on applied measurement approaches
-Collaborative discussion to identify priority themes and working groups
-Opportunities for ongoing engagement in shaping governance and participation models

This Community of Practice reflects a shared commitment to building durable, inclusive, and representative approaches to connectivity measurement — ensuring that data serves the communities it is intended to support.

Who Should Join
We welcome participation from those working at the intersection of internet measurement and public facilities, including:
-Internet measurement researchers and network engineers
-Education and connectivity implementers
-Policymakers and regulators
-Digital equity advocates and civil society organizations
-Technical infrastructure providers

Whether you work on measurement methodologies, connectivity deployment, or education systems, your perspective will help shape this collaborative effort.
