GSOC 2024 contribution

Hello everyone,

I came across the projects done under MDAnalysis, I have good knowledge about python and C++ as well as I have done some projects in ML. I am interested in contributing to the library but I have no idea from where to begin. Please guide me where I can start contributing, I will be enthusiastically participating in it.

Hello Vaastavi, and welcome to MDAnalysis!

MDAnalysis is a Python package for the analysis trajectories from molecular dynamic simulations. If you haven't used MDAnalysis before, the first step would be to learn a bit more about the package and how it works. You can find a lot of learning material here:

In particular the User Guide contains a lot of interesting information about MDAnalysis:

If you are already familiar with MDAnalysis you can have a look at the "Contributing to MDAnalysis" section of the user guide, which will explain how to contribute to the MDAnalysis codebase (or the user guide itself):

Hi Vaastavi,

In addition to what Oliver said (it’s a great starting point!) and since you wrote to the GSoC mailing list, I just want to point out that we don’t yet know if we, the MDAnalysis organisation, will be selected for GSoC 2024.

We will likely apply, but the final decision is entirely on Google.

But of course, you are very welcome to get up to speed with the code base and start contributing in the meantime/outside of GSoC!

Thank you for your reply, and since I am new to open source contributions, I will explore the opportunities and certainly contribute to MDAnalysis wherever possible.
