Moderator’s Chat for June 2026,
Greetings and Happy Pride Month 2026!
As not all, but many know, June is considered GLBTQ + Pride Month in many countries across the globe! I would be remiss to not include some type of pride message as your out, openly gay Moderator. I come to this message from a journey of once being a closeted gay Seminary student who was “outed” by his non-supportive, clergy advisor, who then proceeded to kick me “out the door,” to being an out UCC Moderator of an Open & Affirming congregation and state conference. Most of this “coming out” experience was in the International United Methodist Church Board of Church & Society that put me front and center in the Wisconsin Annual Conference of the Methodist Church, as one of the first openly GLBTQ+ delegates. This eventually led to me being the Chair of the Wisconsin Annual Conference of Church & Society Committee as its first openly gay member, followed by an Appointment by then Bishop Sharon Radar to the Sexual Orientation Task Force of the Wisconsin Council of Churches. I have forged a pretty sturdy armor and worked in building bridges for and with those Supportive and not of people like me who felt called to work in that denomination. After almost 20 years of this work and meeting Dennis, I decided it was time to find a denomination that would accept me for who I was fully and openly and would allow me to do the work I felt called to do.
Furthermore, in attending the UCC State Lay Academy with MUCC members Kris Gorton (then) and Jean Duchrow, many came to encourage me that my calling was strong in the area of administrative work and that I should try to share this gift. Suffice it to say, it seems whenever I am Moderator, monumental changes are taking place in the community I serve. A pastoral transition is one of those “biggie“ events in our denomination. I pray that I am leading our SaLT with all the opportunities needed for all to participate.
In closing, I’ve tried to bring forward issues for our SaLT that I have seen, either unresolved or unknown, and that, if addressed faithfully by leadership, will make our community an effective and well-oiled machine so that a transition to a settled pastor will be successful. Your feedback and prayers are always appreciated, so please never hesitate to bring information forward, etc.
Have a great summer and see you at church!
Walt Jackson, The “Wesleyan” Moderator

Weekly Creation Care Topic
Reduce/Reuse/Recycle
June 5: Celebrate June PRIDE month by getting to (more fully) know an LGBTQ+ environmentalist who worked to make our planet a better home. Rachel Carson, whom many know from her masterpiece, Silent Spring, is the subject of Rachel Carson & the Power of Queer Love by Lida Maxwell. Maxwell writes of how the deep love of Dorothy Freeman enabled Carson to take a more critical view of capitalism & its effects on human and nonhuman lives. “Their story calls us to embrace this sparkling world of wonder as a site of supreme beauty and possibility, a place where we can become more ourselves and create a better future through fighting climate change.”
