Bluebird Nest Boxes Report

On April 23, 2025, the Creation Care Team installed two bluebird nest boxes; one is along Anthony Street near the prairie areas, and the second is along Broadhead Street near the pollinator garden by the cross. The boxes were provided free of charge by the Bluebird Restoration Association of WI (BRAW).

Members of the Creation Care Team committed to monitoring the boxes once a week, starting in April and throughout the summer, to determine if bluebirds (or other birds) were present, if there were eggs, and if any birds fledged. A final summary report was sent to BRAW at the end of September.

When we installed the nest boxes, Mary Sobol (a McFarland resident, bluebird enthusiast, and member of BRAW who arranged for our church to obtain the two nest boxes) provided information about local nesting birds. There are five birds in our area who nest in cavities (e.g., nest boxes), including the Eastern Bluebird, Tree Swallow, Black-capped Chickadee, House Wren, and House Sparrow. Mary told us in April that each of these birds may end up in one or both of our nest boxes. While we had hoped

to have bluebirds make a home at our church, both nest boxes were occupied by House Sparrows throughout the Spring and Summer.

The Creation Care Team will clean out and sanitize the two nest boxes for Fall and Winter. By next Spring, we will make sure the boxes are ready again, when we hope to attract bluebirds to our church property.

Keep Bringing Styrofoam!

Pictured is this week's collection of styrofoam. We are excited to see people using this recycling opportunity! The bin gets emptied weekly, so keep filling it up!

Reduce/Reuse/Recycle

This week’s tipREDUCE - In Buy Now! The Shopping Conspiracy, a documentary written and directed by News & Documentary Emmy Award nominee Nic Stacey, the architects of our collective desire for endless consumption, reveals how corporations are hell-bent on increasing profits, how they convince unsuspecting consumers time and time again to part with their money, and what happens when all of our discarded purchases make their way to landfills. Commentators who witnessed the inner workings of corporations from Amazon to Apple sit down to talk about the unsavory practices their former employers are still using. But while we’re all being encouraged to quench a bottomless thirst for more stuff, it’s the future generations and our environment that end up paying the price. Click here to see the trailer available on Netflix.  (movie recommended by Araceli Wehr as an eye-opener and conversation piece)
