CHAIR OF LIBERAL ARTS

The Minneapolis College of Art and Design seeks an experienced and forward-thinking educator to lead its Liberal Arts department within a BFA/MFA-granting institution. The Liberal Arts Chair oversees curriculum, staffing, scheduling, budgeting, and faculty development, and represents the department’s needs and interests in the Academic Cabinet. The position requires teaching one course each semester. The Chair reports to the Vice President of Academic Affairs. Applicants should have professional scholarly experience with either historical/contemporary art and design, or with humanities and sciences as represented in the Liberal Arts curriculum. Ideally, candidates will have supportive knowledge of the breadth of the liberal arts course offerings. 

 

MCAD’s Liberal Arts curriculum has a two-fold purpose: to provide intellectual and historical context for students’ studio educations, and to provide broader cultural, social and philosophical instruction relevant to all students seeking professional careers and responsible citizenship. One-third of the undergraduates’ course load is in Liberal Arts. The curriculum provides foundational instruction in writing and art and design history. A broad variety of upper level courses fill out art, design, and other histories of the studio majors of the college, while other upper level courses serve to meet the college’s distribution requirements for studies in the humanities and related sciences. The department offers an Art History minor.

 

Candidates must have a PhD in a related discipline, or other applicable advanced degree, demonstrated administrative and teaching experience (minimum 5 years) and a national record of publication and scholarship.

 

The successful candidate will possess

ASSISTANT PROFESSOR OF WEB+MULTIMEDIA ENVIRONMENTS

The Media Arts Department at the Minneapolis College of Art and Design seeks candidates for a full time faculty position in the Web+Multimedia Environments Program with a dynamic approach to teaching in this innovative academic arena. Committed to fostering the growth of experimental practice, forward thinking and artistic excellence, the Media Arts Department is looking for passionate, energetic candidates dedicated in equal measures to art education and creative practice. The successful applicant will teach a full-time load of three classes per semester, advise students, serve on college committees and report to the Chair of Media Arts. Courses taught will cover a broad range from Foundation Media software surveys, programming, web and screen- based classes, to advanced level virtual and physical interactive concepts.

 

Qualifications
Applicants should demonstrate a solid record of achievement in artistic as well as academic practice, and hold an advanced degree in an applicable field (or professional equivalent). Three years teaching experience preferred. MCAD is seeking candidates who are actively engaged and knowledgeable in the following areas: web and interactive art and design, physical and non- physical computing, gaming and virtual environments development, new and hybrid media practice. The candidate must be well-versed in the histories and theories interactive and multimedia art, demonstrate command of professional software and hardware for development of interactive, dynamic and generative work, and fluency in at least two programming and markup languages on Mac OS platform (iOS development skills a plus). Additionally, the successful candidate will demonstrate experience and knowledge of screen-based, installation and performance media, understanding of, and interest in interdisciplinary practice and teaching, and will have a successful record of teaching in the relevant areas.

ASSISTANT PROFESSOR OF FURNITURE DESIGN

The Minneapolis College of Art & Design (MCAD) seeks a visionary furniture maker to lead the furniture design program. Building on a 30-year history of craft and concept, Furniture Design is the second largest major within the fine art department, and includes both studio furniture and digital design and fabrication. Our commitment to the design and creation of furniture is supported by an extensively equipped and professionally staffed 7500 square foot shop with individual studio spaces for students in the program. The shop includes wood shop, welding shop, foundry, sewing room, spray booths, rapid prototypers, CNC router and laser cutter. Full-time faculty typically teach 3 courses per semester, including foundation 3-D and upper-level furniture courses. MCAD offers renewable, long-term contracts based on a clearly defined peer-review process. This position is benefits eligible. This position reports to the chair of the Fine Art Department. The successful candidate will take on a leadership role in shaping the future of the furniture design program and development of related curriculum.

 

Qualifications

·       Solid record of achievement in artistic as well as academic practice

·       Advanced degree in an applicable field (or professional equivalent)

·       Three years teaching experience preferred

·       Working knowledge of all processes utilized in the making and manufacture of furniture; technically skilled in the areas of wood, metal, plastics, composites, upholstered, and varied, new, and experimental materials and techniques

·       Well-versed in the practices of creative studio furniture, furniture fabrication, and furniture design

·       Experience and knowledge of digital design and fabrication.

·       Demonstrates a mastery of the processes related to their own work

·       Extensive knowledge of, and ability to convey the history of furniture design

·       Will continue to expand the definition of furniture, and embrace research to remain current with directions in the profession

·       Demonstrates through their own studio work a passion and commitment to the practice of furniture making and design
