We have a GSoC project for importing Excel and JSON. As far as I can tell, Anshuman is working on this project, with Dom and Anish mentoring. I have not been paying attention to this project, but it came to my attention last week when Anshuman asked for some front end help. Now I want to bump this request up to to the team level in order to figure out how we plan to help Anshuman with this project.

This project appears to require some UI changes to our import process.

  • Who is responsible for mentoring Anshuman on the UX design process for these changes? For example Anshuman asked “What exactly do you mean by mockup?” I think we need someone on the team to help with this design process. The design mentor would work with Anshuman to produce a first draft design and get it approved by the rest of the team.

  • Who is responsible for mentoring Anshuman on the front end work for these changes? This person would review/merge Anshuman’s front end changes.

I recently made some substantial changes to the front-end import code and thus would be well positioned to mentor Anshuman for both design and code. I’d be open to doing it, but I want to be intentional about the process. Is anyone else already doing this? What’s the timeline for completing this project? Are there some technical specs documented anywhere for what sort of behavior we’re aiming for with the import process? If I do sign up to help, I want to understand what I'm signing up for.

It looks like Anshuman’s GSoC project has ended this week, will there be time for Anshuman to work on this at all?

On our final call with Anshuman before the deadline, he expressed interest in seeing these final touches on his project done, but who knows. If someone is willing to be the frontend/ux mentor, we can offer Anshuman the possibility of extending the internship until the frontend changes are completed.

For an (unrequested) explanation of why the frontend changes got "left behind": we split our goals into essentials and nice-to-haves, and doing the actual frontend interface changes was a nice-to-have, because we advertised, and wanted to treat this as a backend-only project. So we said, if we get the time, we'll try and get this done too. In the end, we didn't have the time.
