Hi there, Sausalito advocates!

There is an important item on the city council agenda tonight (Tuesday, December 5th) that you should know about.

Bridgeway - Johnson to Napa
City staff are presenting a report about ways to make this section of Bridgeway safer for pedestrians (and potentially bicyclists too). Bridgeway is a key route in Marin's bicycle network, and this segment has seen a large number bicyclists and pedestrians being hit and injured by cars.

City Recommendations
The city staff is recommending improving crosswalk visibility by "daylighting" some corners (i.e. removing a parking space where parked cars block sightlines), and by creating "median refuges," places where a pedestrian can safely stop halfway across the street. These upgrades, called Phases 1 and 2, are all good changes that MCBC supports.

MCBC Recommendations
City staff identify several changes that would improve bike safety, but currently do not recommend moving forward with them. These are:
  • Removing some parking on the southwest side of the street between Easterby St and Napa St to provide a southbound bike lane
  • Removing parking on the northeast side of the street to provide a northbound bike lane between Johnson St and Litho St
In both of these areas, bicyclists currently have to "take the lane" and mix with car traffic, discouraging most potential riders. We urge the city to move both projects forward. Bridgeway regularly sees over 1000 bicycle trips per day. Providing space for these road users is more important than a couple dozen parking places across the street from any fronting businesses.

Click here to send an email to the city council. You can use the following talking points:
  • Where you live
  • How you use Bridgeway
  • Say you support Phase 1 and 2 improvements
  • The city should advance the Phase 3 and the Easterby-Napa improvements
  • Roads are for moving people safely over storing cars
Zooming into the meeting
You can join the meeting remotely and give a comment via Zoom. Find the zoom link here (password: 123456). The Bridgeway item should come up around 7:30 PM.

See you there!
