Woodshop Team,

The new planer looks really good. What is the plan for installing
the new equipment?  The electrics will soon be available, and I
understand there is some dust extraction to arrange.

Anything that needs to happen can, but must be driven by the owners
and users of the equipment. What is needed?

    Thanks,

    Ward

Hi Ward,

The next steps are I believe (not in any particular order):

  1. Bruno to finish setting the machine up (just final adjustment to the planer fence left)
  2. Bruno to test the machine (Done)
  3. Bruno to produce training course (In progress)
  4. Bruce to review the slides (To be done as dependent on 3.)
  5. Chris to arrange the electric (done I believe)
  6. Chris to arrange dust extraction (we had a proposal approved since October 2021 for the re-fitting of the dust extraction pipes, if this will take longer let me know so I can look for alternatives)
  7. Chris to produce a safety assessment and inform trainers what needs to be done and included in the training
  8. Decision on the black equipment policy and how it will be enforced (board)
  9. Course published on the equipment/training pages

If there is anything else that is needed for me let me know. I am preparing the slides at the moment but will need to go into makespace to grab pictures, so probably next Tuesday. Dust extraction and the safety policy are the main blockers I believe.

I noticed last night that the New thicknesser is slowly getting a light dusting of rust on the cast iron top.
With the external season coming to a slow I’m finding my time more able to swing towards MS…

I would therefore like to approach the floor and offer my assistance with the maintenance, training and general running or the machine so a more widespread availability of the machinery.

I would also like to ask what the plan moving forward is for the smaller metabo thicknesser, is it to be kept, or retired?

Hi Richard,

Thank you for offering to help. I think the general approach now is that any general maintenance can be done by any member. So if you see something that needs doing there is nothing stopping you from doing it.

For more complex maintenance tasks you just need to talk to management or current maintainers to get a go ahead. You then log whatever you have done using the maintenance log system which I am trouble locating right now but I am sure someone will link it here.

As for the last question I am guessing it will depend on whatever the current conversation happening on the background conversation on the need for a new category of equipment will end up. Although it is tempting to keep both available, an additional machine means twice the burden for trainning and maintenence and currently there is a very small number of people that are volunteering for those so I think we should only keep it if there is a good enough reason for it.

That’s great.

So yes count me in! Let’s meet up and go through the current training programme as it currently stands, and see if we can’t getting it ticking along some.

I’m familiar with planer thicknesser (albeit not this small, so I’m sure once I’ve had a look through the manual I could get a grip of it prior to actually handling it….
Let’s get it done, signed off and start training folks….

When’s good for
You to meet?

Rich

The planner/thicknesser online trainning is currently done and ready to go live but we are blocked by the inhexistence of dust extraction. Which I believed Chris has hired an external company to do but they may take up to 3 weeks. If you would like to review the slides though that would be appreciated.
