Hi All

As part of increasing bio-related activities in Makespace and building the community of people interested in the crossover of making and biology, Camillo Moschner made a very kind offer to run a monthly seminar on engineering biology for non-biologists.

Would anyone be willing to host and coordinate this? Either as a hybrid event or fully online if no Makespace members can host an in-person part.
Thanks very much for considering this!

Hi Vamsi

There's been no discussion on timing yet - that would be for the host and Camillo and anyone else who is keen to help/attend to decide between them, it would also depend on classroom availability if they decide to go for hybrid.

Hi All

As there are no offers from any Makespace members to be present and host this event in the classroom, it looks like it will have to be fully online.

It's a bit of a shame to not have the opportunity to get people together in-person, so if you are a Makespace member who is interested in attending the seminar and would be willing to turn up half an hour early and be responsible for doing the safety spiel and making sure people are not on fire and can find the loo, please shout!

I've hosted upwards of 50 events in the classroom, both my own and volunteering as "the Makespace member" so non-members can host outreach workshops. I'm happy to talk through it with anyone who is unsure about what it entails and help you get set up with the (minimal) admin required.

Hi All

Some more details from Camillo who would like to present his talks on on engineering biology for non-biologists on the first Monday of the month, ideally from Monday 5th September in the evening (exact time TBC).

He will run 6 x 40 min talks on:
  1. the importance of biotechnology (both from a health/environment/industry impact and a financial perspective),
  2. what biotech work actually includes and some opportunities there might be for the Makespace communities in it,
  3. case studies of companies and maybe even papers, highlighting the merging of biotech and classical engineering, and introducing new principles and ideas along the way.
With these additional details - would any Makespace members be willing to turn up and act as the room hosts?

Hi All

We have now fixed a time for this to take place: Mon 3 Oct @ 18:30 and on the first Monday of the month for approx 6 months.
Would anyone be up for hosting? To recap on responsibilities, you would need to attend the seminar, be willing to turn up 20-30 min early and help set up the AV kit (webcam and speakerphone), do the safety spiel for non-members and make sure people are not on fire and can find the loo :)

More than one person would be excellent so someone can do the AV and someone can welcome the in-person attendees.
Let me and Camillo know if you think you could help out!

Jenny
