Focal areas and padding instead of cropping

Hello eveyone,

I'm using the focal point module which mostly works nicely.
But now I have one case where I want to avoid cropping and

instead need to preserve the entire image and use padding to
fill up the sides and create an image in the desired format.

This should be a common requirement. Is it possible to

do this with the focal point module? If not, what would be

the best way?
