The RAEng (Royal Academy of Engineering) offers Research Fellowships each year to outstanding early-career researchers to support them to become future research leaders in engineering. Objectives are to:
• Support the best early-career researchers in establishing their independence and international reputation.
• Provide long-term support enabling the pursuit of an ambitious programme of engineering research and impact.
• Develop ambassadors for the Academy and advocates for STEM (science, technology, engineering, and mathematics) disciplines.
The duration of a Research Fellowship is five years full time (pro rata for part-time awards). https://raeng.org.uk/research-fellowships
ELIGIBILITY:
RAEng welcomes applications from Early-career researchers worldwide with a PhD, which was awarded (or the PhD has been unconditionally approved) no more than four years before the submission deadline 17th September 2025. There is also a three-month margin for maternity/paternity leave or other extenuating circumstances.
APPLICATION LIMIT:
Each host institution/University can only submit up to a maximum of four applications:
• If the submission is four applications, at least two of the four applications must be submitted by candidates from underrepresented groups
• If the submission is three applications, at least one of the three applications must be submitted by a candidate from underrepresented groups
• If the submission is one or two applications, the application or applications do not need to be submitted by candidates from the identified underrepresented groups. However, the expectations of host institutions still apply.
The Academy has identified the following as significantly underrepresented groups:
• Women
• Black people, including those with any mixed ethnicity with Black ethnic background(s)
• Disabled people
HWU INTERNAL PROCESS - Outline application and delivering a 5-Min Pitch
HWU has put in place an internal review and selection process to put forward the highest calibre candidates for application submission which includes submitting an outline application and delivering a 5-minute verbal Pitch to the internal reviewer panel.
OUTLINE APPLICATION: Please submit a Single PDF containing the below (entitled Surname_FirstName_School) via the Fellowship College Portal by the end of Wednesday, 16th April 2025 (Mentors should submit if the candidate is external to HWU)
1) Narrative style CV (3 Pages max) Use Template attached
2) Publications List (No Page limit)
3) Outline form (3 Pages max) Use Template attached. Please follow the format/headings: Why are you the right person to apply for a RAEng Research Fellowship? Research Goals and Objectives, Timeliness and Novelty, Methodology, Risks, Collaborations, Beneficiaries and Impact (Including Dissemination and Public Engagement), Diversity and Inclusion, Exploitation, Choice of Host Institution and Ambitions and Future Plans (Including Training and Development Plans).
4) Mentor Statement. This is a brief statement from your primary mentor to confirm their support (email copies accepted). They should describe their contribution to development of the outline, confirm their commitment to support development of full application, and to mentor you during the Fellowship should you be successful.
5-MINUTE PITCH for All candidates that have submitted an outline. To be held on 1st May 2025 between 9am and 12pm either in person (Large Room in RED Hub) or online via Teams. We will be in touch with individual time slots after the outline submission deadline date (16th April). Pre-recorded pitches will be accepted if you are unable to make this date. The 5 minute pitches will follow RAEng’s requirement at interview stage that candidates are required to deliver. Please prepare a 4 slide 5-min pitch/PowerPoint presentation in the following format:
1. Introduction slide (containing only your name, Host University, project title)
2. Major aims and objectives of the research
3. Impact that the research will have on the economy and society
4. Your future career plans

NEXT STEPS: The internal review and selection panel will be held at the beginning of May 2025 and outcomes will be communicated as to whether you have been selected for submission in Sept ‘25.

INFORMATION SESSION
A briefing session will be held on Wednesday, 19th March 2025 1-2pm in the RED Hub (Large Room), Top Floor Hugh Nisbet Building and online via Microsoft Teams. Any Applicants (internal and external) and Mentors welcome.
We will go through the Scheme, Eligibility and the HWU Internal Selection Process, followed by Q and A.
