to SIGMAA on Inquiry-Based Learning (IBL)
[My apologies if you receive this announcement multiple times.]

Dear Colleagues,

This is a friendly reminder that the registration for the first Greater Upstate New York Regional Inquiry-Based Learning Conference is getting close. Everyone is welcome to attend the conference and we especially welcome participants who are new to teaching with inquiry.

Time: Saturday 9:30am-4:00pm, October 19, 2019
Location: SUNY Oswego Metro Center in Syracuse, NY

The conference will have a live classroom demonstration and reflection, a workshop on equitable practice in classrooms facilitated by Brian Katz, and 10-minute contributed talks. There will also be plenty of opportunities to socialize with other IBLers.

The registration fee is $20 (including coffee and lunch). The registration deadline is October 1, 2019.

Registration and Abstract Submissionshttps://forms.gle/U36jNdvoVwNnwx6L9

Call for Abstracts: Conference attendees are invited to give a 10-minute talk about or demonstration of an aspect of teaching using IBL methods. Rather than sharing formal scholarship on IBL teaching, participants are invited to speak about their IBL course design, or demonstrate and discuss an IBL teaching practice used in a specific course, or another similar topic. The aim of these contributed talks is to share some best practices related to IBL teaching and to be used as a springboard for conversations and networking opportunities during and after the conference. If you would like to give such a presentation, please submit a brief abstract (50-100 words) when you register.

Live Classroom: In this event, you will be asked to take part in an immersive IBL experience. You’ll be students in a “classroom”. The topic won’t be a standard classroom topic because the goal is not about content, but rather to experience an inquiry-based classroom and see the moves an instructor might make within such an environment. The joys and frustrations you experience will only be amplified in your own classrooms, so hopefully this experience will shed light on how we can better interact with our own students to create a positive learning environment. The session will consist of a “classroom” session followed by a “reflection” activity. Live classroom goals:

1. To experience an inquiry-based activity from a student’s perspective.
2. To witness, analyze, and challenge the teacher moves made during an inquiry-based activity.
3. To elucidate some of the student challenges and fears in your own classroom.
