Hi everyone,

We're a local community/arts and cultural archive in Minnesota and we are hoping to create identifiers for our classification records. Possibly:
Photograph (P)
Postcard (P-PC)
Stamps (S)
Objects (O)
Envelopes, wrappers, etc.
Manuscripts (M) or Books and Manuscripts (BM) or (B)

Considering we have various formats of these documents, we are trying to categorize them in their designated format. Do you have an idea where we can find standard identifiers? For example, do maps fall under manuscripts? Are envelopes with stamps and writings considered an object? Same for wrapper/package? Or are the identifiers created locally and unique to each collection?

Hi Samira,

I have linked the Library of Congress Genre Form headings PDF, which are the standard identifiers for types of material (photographs, stamps, etc.).

I am a local archivist and would be happy to be a contact if you have any future questions!

Micah
