Advice needed: Letter recipients

Hello,

We've been discussing where to place letter recipients in ArchivesSpace. We use the relator to label them as a recipient, but we have been going back and forth on whether to mark the recipient as a subject or a creator. It is not a perfect fit either way. I looked through other repositories to see how they deal with a letter recipient and I have seen it both ways. What does your repository do and why? Any advice would be appreciated to settle our debate!

Hi Sarah,

We enter letter recipients as creator with the "recipient" designation, with the logic being that the recipient of a letter is a primary occasion of the letter's existence. In some cases we will also enter the agent as a subject of the letter, but only if the content of the letter is about the recipient in a significant way. Typically we reserve agent-as-subject for individuals mentioned in a letter who are neither sender nor recipient.

Hope that makes sense, I can definitely see other logical approaches.
