Hello all,

I was wondering if anyone has tools or hacks for batch creation and linking of top containers?

Specifically, we often need to create between 50-300 top containers and link them to 1 accession record. It is so much work to create the top containers one-by-one and then link them to the accession. Before we explore the API, is there something I am missing?

Any and all suggestions are welcome!!

Thanks so much,

Anna

I use the API to generate the containers, grab the UUID of the container when it is being created and then harvest down and plug that data into the accession record. I get a little concerned with top containers numbering greater than 250 because I once completely crashed the system with an over 350 container count.

To perform the task you need python on your computer, ArchiveSnake and a few other libraries and the ability to access your system API.

If you can do that, try something like this script: https://github.com/brianmatthewthomas/archivesSpace/blob/master/topContainer_generateFromTransferSheet.py. The script cuts the pairing at 200. I can send you an off-list copy of the spreadsheet template the script pulls your data from.

You will need to modify the script to the specifics of your system. If you’ve never used the API, it is worth the learning curve to do so. I generated something like 17k top containers with paired locations in a few hours a couple of month back to populate our stacks data. Could have been a couple of minutes but I wanted to be cautious.

Hope this helps.

Hello Brian,

Thanks so much for your answer. I was trying to find a solution that didn’t involve the API but since that doesn’t seem to exist, I will save this info to pass on to my IT department.

Best,

Anna
