session expiration / login / undesired redirect to home

I've seen this brought up before but more in relation to adjusting the timeout period (see https://groups.google.com/a/lyrasislists.org/g/archivesspace_users_group/c/xoGnw--PDNk/m/uS6ziZIdAAAJ for an example).

My biggest concern is that regardless of timeout length, I want to be returned to the URL I was at previously after the login interaction. It seems like the two Jira issues below were meant to address this very thing with a modal login window. They are from 10+ years ago though. Is there a setting I'm missing? Has there been a regression in later versions?
