Dear ArchivesSpace members,Ā

Ā

ArchivesSpace will be offering a multi-session training on using the ArchivesSpace API on April 7, 14, and 21, 2026.Ā  This is the first time the ArchivesSpace trainers corps has offered a virtual training on the ArchivesSpace API and we hope to use this training as a pilot and learning opportunity to offer more trainings like this in the future.Ā  Since this training is a pilot, it will be offered free to ArchivesSpace members only and capacity will be limited to 25 attendees.Ā

Information about the training is as follows:

Title: Introduction to the ArchivesSpace API (limit 25 attendees)
Dates:Ā April 7, 14, 21, 2026
Time:Ā 12pm-3pm ET/9am-12pm PT
Instructors:Ā Lora Woodford (ArchivesSpace) and Kevin Clair (Penn State)

Ā

Participants in this workshop will learn:

  • A general overview of APIs

  • How to access the ArchivesSpace API

  • If using the ArchivesSpace API is right for you and your work

  • How to communicate about the ArchivesSpace API to colleagues

  • How to use the ArchivesSpace API to complete tasks in ArchivesSpace

Participant requirements:

  • High level of participation -- attendees should register only if they are prepared to participate in discussions and complete exercises assigned between workshop dates

  • Working knowledge of ArchivesSpace functionality and the staff user interface

  • Have administrative access on the computer you are using so you can download software like Postman on the computer

    • Note: attendees will not be expected to install ArchivesSpace on their personal computer

Registration for this training is available at https://lyrasis.zoom.us/webinar/register/WN_zWbxF2hQTqW-naY1GhdIVgĀ

This training is available to ArchivesSpace members only.Ā  To register for this training, use your email address affiliated with your ArchivesSpace member organization. Portions of this training will be recorded and made available in the ArchivesSpace Help Center.

Similarly, I believe there would be interest here in attending too - ideally if the ArchivesSpace crew were able to offer a repeat session at a time more suited for Australian members?

Many thanks,

Maybe they'd be willing to record the sessions? And make them available to those of us members who weren't able to register in time or are in a time zone that makes attending difficult?
I've been trying to figure out the API off and on for months and just keep getting headaches from the documentation (and I've figured out other systems' APIs).

Staff in my library would like to join but it filled up too quickly. Another session or making the recording available would be most appreciated.

Hello ArchivesSpace community,

Thank you all for your interest in our upcoming API training pilot. Ā There was a great deal of interest in this hands-on learning opportunity, and we know registration filled quickly. Ā Because this is a training pilot with a high level of individual participation, we have kept registration for the workshop limited to 25 attendees and will not be opening any additional seats. Ā Our goal is to learn from this training pilot and use it to inform future hands-on API training opportunities. Ā While we hope to learn much from this training pilot and to offer a training like this again, we do not have any specific plans to offer this training again in the near future. Ā If you’re interested in upcoming ArchivesSpace training opportunities, you can always view the full training schedule for the year on our website at https://archivesspace.org/resources/user-resources/trainings.

If you’re interested in learning about the ArchivesSpace API more broadly, we have several recorded sessions related to using the ArchivesSpace API on our YouTube channel. Ā This Introduction to the ArchivesSpace APIĀ is a great place to begin.Ā

Best,
Jessica

It occurs to me that the interest in the API training may be indicative of a larger issue in the ASpace application, namely that some reporting/batch changes are entirely too dependent upon the API. Ā While I appreciate that some of us have skillsets in programming and others of us are lucky enough to be supported by a team of software developers, this shouldn’t be a prerequisite for being able to maintain data in ASpace, generate robust reports, and bulk correct/add data. Ā I wonder if there might be benefit in surveying those who wanted to attend to identify which specific tasks they need the API to do (that can’t otherwise be done in the UI) and using that as the basis for an upcoming development sprint to build out reporting/bulk change functionality.

1000% agree! This interest is due to limitations in the Staff UI.

I echo other sentiments for additional, guided training, and I also think it would be beneficial for the hands-on exercises to be made available to Aspace Membership to review independently if we are more confident with APIs but also want some controlled exercises with Aspace itself.

Hello everyone,

Thank you for all the feedback that has been shared here in connection with the upcoming API workshop. This workshop is part of ongoing efforts to provide ways to support people - and connect people - in building skills that will help them work with the application beyond the interfaces. We know there are quite a few technically inclined archivists and others in the community who appreciate the opportunity to expand their professional toolbox in this way. There will be other opportunities and ways to benefit from what comes out of this particular offering.

I want to assure everyone that it does not indicate a lack of commitment to other types of users, however. We continue to add functionality that helps people do what they need to do primarily through the interfaces or with mechanisms that are very familiar in every release. With a larger developer team in place now, we do expect to have the capacity to do some work to normalize across some of the different mechanisms for adding, updating, and working with data across the application via CSV files and spreadsheets that have built up over the years. We’ll also be making improvements to reporting functionality. More information will be available as we get further into this work later in the year.

Lastly, I want to give a plug for those who have worked on local projects to extend capabilities in the core application to consider contributing this work to the core code or to the extensive listing of community-generated resources on the Awesome ArchivesSpace list. As you’ve heard in some recent webinars and other programs, there are some significant community-based development projects going on this year and we will all reap the benefits in upcoming releases.

Thanks again for this discussion and support of making ArchivesSpace better for everyone. The program team greatly appreciates the deep engagement of this wonderful community.

Christine

Completely agree as well. We depend highly on the API and our software solutions developer to do many bulk requests for us.
