Dear ArchivesSpace members:

As the Chair of the ArchivesSpace Governance Board, I am writing to report on the group’s 1st Quarter meeting, which was held virtually on September 8.

We welcomed our new member, Nadia Nasr of Santa Clara University, and reviewed our Board processes and recent activities.

We discussed an operations report that highlighted membership trends and the recruitments for the two new positions the Board approved at its previous meeting. We learned about the activities of the Technical Advisory Council and User Advisory Council as they onboarded their new members to start the new term after a successful nominating cycle. We also reviewed the continued healthy financial position of ArchivesSpace.

The Board finalized its new strategic roadmap. The strategic roadmap is the culmination of the Board’s program of strategic discussions during the FY2024-2025 term. Using the facets from the It Takes a Village open source sustainability framework, the strategic roadmap highlights goals for ArchivesSpace’s activities in Governance, Technology, Community Engagement, and Resourcing through FY2030. More information will be shared with the TAC and UAC and the larger ArchivesSpace community soon.

We also discussed a new option for community members to make one-time financial contributions to the community supported technologies for which Lyrasis serves as the Organizational Home. This could give people and institutions that either cannot become ArchivesSpace members themselves or wish to support the program beyond membership an opportunity to contribute toward particular projects or sustainability overall. The Board discussed how these kinds of contributions could be helpful in working toward achieving desired outcomes that came up in our strategic discussions and are on the strategic roadmap. Several Board members volunteered for a task force to consider the issue further.

This is the first chair’s message of my term and I am looking forward to sharing the work we do on behalf of the community over this year. Please feel free to reach out directly to me or to your elected representative if you have feedback you would like to share.

My best,

Maggie
