Dear ArchivesSpace users,

For the past years we have been using the FAST plugin developed by someone at the Virginia Military Institute, see https://github.com/maderikra/archivesspace-plugins/tree/master/fast_subjects.

It appears that the plugin is no longer functional, we do not know exactly when it stopped working. We will try and ask if the plugin can be updated, but there hasn't been any activity in that repository for years, so I wanted to inquire about other options to ingest FAST headings in ArchivesSpace.

Is anyone else using FAST in ArchivesSpace? If so, how do you import records into ArchivesSpace?

Kind regards,

Hadewijch

Hello Hadewijch,

We use FAST for topics and places, but have never used the plugin you're talking about. We have, I think, a pretty unique way of handling taxonomy management. I am the only one who adds subject and agent records. Processors use a taxonomy request form to submit a request for new terms. Depending on the number of FAST requests I get, I either manually check them for accuracy check in with the FAST API. Similarly, depending on the number of requests, I either manually add them to ASpace or use the ASpace API. Semi-annually I check in with FAST via the API to make sure the labels are up to date. I just use the URI/FAST ID  as the basis of the API anc compare labels.

Not as easy as a plugin. But I do like having a somewhat more limited/controlled set of terms for processors to work with. I think it leads to more consistent usage of terms applied to similar records. Hopefully in your case, though, the Virginia Military Institute might have a fix.

Thanks,
Olivia
