Hi folks,

We started migrating to 4.2 but have paused our efforts because we noticed a difference in the PUI search results from 4.1. Have others noticed this? Is it an intentional change to improve relevancy, or just a bug in this release?

More specifically, here is a discrepancy I noticed...

In 4.1, with a search term and a bunch of filters applied, I got two results. In the second result, the search term ("Howland") does not appear anywhere in that AO's title or notes. However, the search term does appear in the ancestor metadata ("Howland family papers"), so I'm sure that's why it's coming up in search results.

Are other people noticing this discrepancy? Is it an intentional change? An error in 4.2? An error in our instance/implementation? Something customizable in 4.2 that we can tweak if we want to?

I would appreciate hearing from other folks about this!

Here's 4.1

Hi Celia,

Most probably the change in search results you are observing has to do with the changes introduced as a fix for https://archivesspace.atlassian.net/browse/ANW-2441 see Pull Request:  https://github.com/archivesspace/archivesspace/pull/3804

This behavior difference between 4.1 and 4.2 was intentional:

In 4.1, the PUI search included finding_aid_filing_title as an explicit search field. This meant that if a collection's Filing Title contained "Howland" - even if the collection's main Title did not - that record (and potentially its child archival objects, which would have "Howland" visible in their ancestor context) would surface in PUI keyword searches.

In 4.2, finding_aid_filing_title was intentionally removed from the PUI search fields and excluded from the full-text index. It remains searchable from the staff UI though. The intent is that the Filing Title is a sorting/filing aid, not public metadata.

Hope this helps explain the difference in search results you are observing.

Thanks,

Thimios
